This wasn't a favorite among the younger crowd as the jokes and quips went right over her head. She wasn't so aware of the slight of words and how their meaning can change with all the dad jokes. This might be more for an older crowd, think 8+, but I am not sure if they will sit still enough for a picture book with just drawings of family members and the dad making silly jokes over and over. The book kind of gets boring and stale after a while, around 5 jokes in. It is a good idea in essence, but I think the premise doesn't work for the younger audience.

Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for a honest review. I promise my review is 100% accurate to me.
The ultimate dad joke infused story. I really enjoyed this story as did my dad after I read it to him .

My Dad Thinks He’s a Scream has a family going out trick-or-treating while their dad shares groan-worthy plays on words and jokes. Germein has created a hilarious story that will have readers clutching their sides as they see the eyerolls these kids give Dad. With equally fun and zany illustrations from Tom Jellett, My Dad Thinks He’s a Scream is sure to be a hit. Although this is perfect for Halloween, the book will be an enjoyable read throughout the year.

This silly picture book is part of a series. In this Halloween-focused installment, the dad makes lots of puns and dad jokes about the family's costumes, and about all of their experiences on Halloween night. It's cute and funny, and the dad's personality shines through. Some of the puns involve complex enough wordplay that the youngest children may not get it, but this is great for early elementary aged kids, and adults will enjoy this as well.

I read A LOT of books with my son, and these books are some of our favorites! The first one we ever read was the Pirate one, so when I saw this one, I knew I had to read another PUN-derful one!

This was a delight. Hardly any plot, just joke after joke, pun after pun. Some of them were unique and some of them were the same joke again and again which I also loved. Very cute illustrations in a very short and sweet book.

Thank you to Netgalley, as well as the publisher and the author for an advanced reader copy of the children's book "my dad thinks he's a scream".
Listen, kid, I think your dad IS a scream.
This funny, whimsical Halloween story is full of puns and dad jokes. It's cleverly told and beautifully illustrated. Even the font used was perfect for the whimsy that the book held. The book is release August 5th, 2025 and just in time for spooky season!
I will certainly be purchasing this for my little one when it comes out!

This was a tough one to review. This is a nonstop dad-joke book full of Halloween puns. In true dad-joke style, most of the jokes illicit a groan from the adult readers, but the jokes were lost on my preschooler and instead just made the book difficult for him to follow. A better balance of puns to story line would be much better for the age group reading these kinds of books, and the puns would land better in an early reader chapter book.
The illustrations were fun. We liked the costumes!

This was super cute! I don't have children but I think my niece and nephew would love this one. Halloween and puns are always fun.

Fun book sure to make my younger elementary school students howl!
Puns are universally appreciated and universally looked down upon by everyone who didn't initiate the pun. I found the story sweet, humorous and so amusing. Halloween is such an enjoyable holiday, and this book will definitely be a hit. I have a feeling all those dads, of dad joke distinction, will also appreciate it. This will be a nice addition to my Halloween collection.

This book was a lot of fun. It's filled with jokes and puns that the whole family can enjoy. The pictures are interesting and add depth to the story while providing conversation opportunity. Overall it was a good time.

I think that this book had a good idea, but the execution of it felt very one-note. The best way I can explain this is this book didn't have any layers; no depth to it. In a nutshell, this book was a compilation of a bunch of different Halloween puns and jokes. Nothing is wrong with this idea, but I want to make it known that it is very simple. I think that this book would be a good choice for "younger" young readers due to its simplicity, but I wouldn't recommend it as a book that you would look more into, if that makes sense.
All of that being said, I still liked reading this book and I thought that it was written well. There were a lot of jokes and puns included that were unique, and ones that I've never heard before, which is always great. Additionally, the illustrations complemented the writing nicely, and I loved seeing a variety of different monsters included in the book. Lastly, I want to applaud the author for giving the dad in this story so much personality and life. It really helped make for an extra fun and entertaining story, which is awesome!
