This novella is a charming read that will immerse you into the time period and how the historical developments impact the characters. The story explores the theme of change and how people react when the old ways are replaced by modernization. There is almost a didactic feel to the narrative, as though Berry is teaching a lesson, but because of his tenderness toward the subject matter, it remains thoroughly enjoyable and captivating.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-galley; all opinions in my review are 100% my own.

Beautiful, as always. This novel felt a bit more like an essay at the end, a bit more like it was trying to teach us a lesson than most Port William novels. But I think Andy, being of the generation that bridged the wrenching changes as the old ways (and old people) were replaced by the modern ways, being the one who knew just what has been lost, is the most likely character to want to teach the lesson.

Quietly powerful and deeply rooted. Wendell Berry delivers another heartfelt Port William story, rich with family, land, and resilience. A tender tribute to memory, community, and moral courage. I've been a lifelong fan of his books and this one is no exception!
