I had never heard of Leland Vittert until I picked up this book, since I don’t usually watch his news network. But now, I’m a huge fan.
If you’re on the spectrum, have a child on the spectrum, or know someone who is, this book is an incredibly informative, touching, and eye-opening read. I’m a woman who wasn’t aware of my own autism until middle age, and I also have a teenage son who was diagnosed with level one autism. I deeply related to many of the author's experiences—both as someone who grew up on the spectrum before people even knew what it was, and as a mother navigating the journey of a child whose autism wasn’t recognized until he was 15.
Level one autism can be especially hard to detect—it often shows up as social awkwardness but can remain largely "invisible." Even without a formal diagnosis early on, I sought out occupational therapies and support for my son whenever I could. I’ve always done everything in my power to make life easier for him. Still, my efforts pale in comparison to what this man’s parents did for him. They are truly remarkable.
This story is raw, real, heartbreaking, and inspiring. The author’s perseverance will leave you in awe.

I’m a huge fan of Leland Vittert on NewsNation! I’m constantly urging people to watch his show On Balance with Leland Vittert. You need to at least give it a try; I prefer him to any other news anchor. He’s my go to for unbiased news! I was thrilled to see I’d been approved to read his book! Born Lucky by Leland Vittert is an incredible true story in so many ways. I do know people on the spectrum as they call themselves. It helped me to better understand their up and down moods; especially as one is my cubby mate at the library. I’m a patient listener and very detail oriented (think dog with a bone) so that helps us connect. Born Lucky is an excellent title and even better read. I look at Leland with fresh eyes…in a good way! He has overcome so many challenges with grace and has made the world love him.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this very thoughtful and inspiring title! Thank you to Leland and his family!

It can be so hard to be honest and remember things that were painful in life and I am grateful that Leland did and shared them with us. His determination to do the right thing no matter what and stay true to himself was apparent in every moment of the book. As someone who doesn't pay attention to journalism or news, I am now interested in checking out him and his coverage as well as the station he works for. It brought hope for me back into journalism and news delivery.
