Cozy, heartfelt, and full of charm!
Brigands & Breadknives is an adorable, adventure-filled tale with humor, vibrant characters, and so much heart. The quest is fun, but it’s the emotional depth that really shines. I loved the main character and her relatable struggle to choose her own path — it hit me right in the feelings. A perfect cozy fantasy for fans of Legends & Lattes!

I loved this so much. It might be my favorite in the series!

From my Goodreads review: "I loved this. Maybe 4.5 stars? The end left me a little unsatisfied, or maybe it was just bittersweet. But I laughed, I cried, I loved everybody. I want more!

Thanks to Netgalley for the ALC! The author narrates it, perfectly, of course."

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC audiobook of the third (well, technically second given Bookshops & Bone Dust was a prequel to Legends & Lattes) book in the series that introduced me to cozy fantasy. "Bookshops" left off hinting at what I figured to be Fern packing up shop and moving to Thune to open a new shop, and I don't know why, but I thought we'd just vibe. Instead, we got a hero's quest emanating from a rattkin in midlife crisis mode getting hammered with a dwarf. Viv, Tandry and Thune take a backseat as we meet the Oathmaiden, a wild and unpredictable goblin with a bounty on her head named Zil. Author Travis Baldree again does the narration for the audiobook and he's absolutely brilliant and it's so well done. And while I wasn't really planning for the epic scope of the adventure, the relationships that develop, and the care between characters, it ended up being a very fulfilling read. Fern's need to find herself and start again anew when what she'd always done no longer served her was extremely relatable and as a middle-aged dude who has experienced many similar emotions and feelings in the past 5 COVID/post-COVID years, the last half hour hit me so squarely in the feelings that I found tears leaking out from under my sunglasses as I pushed the mower around the backyard. Some books and series just really connect and make you feel, and even though this wasn't the book I expected going in and wasn't necessarily the book I thought I wanted, it was the book I needed. Travis Baldree has really created something beautiful and I'm only sad that there isn't a fourth book to pick up immediately.

This book was so much fun—if not my favorite of the three in the series! Every character was lovable in their own quirky way, and I found myself genuinely rooting for each of them. The narration was a standout—it brought each character to life with such distinct and creative voices, it felt like I was right there with them.

The story itself was an absolute blast: full of adventure, clever twists, and a world that’s bursting with imagination. It honestly felt like being in a really fun Dungeons & Dragons campaign with friends—chaotic, heartfelt, and full of laughter. If you love stories that don’t take themselves too seriously but still manage to deliver on heart and excitement, you’ll have a great time with this one!

This book felt like wandering into a quiet life I didn’t know I missed. Brigands & Breadknives isn’t just about magic or mayhem. it’s about trying (and failing, and trying again) to figure out who you are when everything around you has changed. Fern is tired, snarky, and deeply real. The chaos-goblin? Iconic. The ratkin? My emotional support rodent. It’s funny, soft, and a little sad in that healing kind of way. Perfect for when your heart needs a warm patchwork quilt of a story. #books #bookreviews #bookreview #bookrecommendations #cozy #cozyfantasy #fantasy

Viv, the barbarian orc who runs the local coffee shop, invited her friend, Fern, to open a bookshop next door. Fern has been going through an emotional conflict, wanting change but at the same time afraid of it. She moves to Thune, ready to open a new bookstore, meaning to open a new bookstore, but one night of a bit of too much drinking finds her waking in the back of a moving cart. She soon finds herself in the company of a legendary warrior and off on an unexpected adventure.

"Brigands & Breadknives" is the third book in the "Legends & Lattes" series by Travis Baldree. After listening to the first book in the series, I knew I had found a new favorite author. and was very excited to get a copy of "Brigands & Breadknives."

This was a fun one. Filled with adventure and love. I really enjoyed.

I liked seeing how the main character is struggling to find herself. That she is ends up on this journey and gets support from unexpected places.

Thx for the early audiobook, Macmillan Audio.

This was a sweary delight! I will always have a soft spot for authors who narrate their own work, and Travis Baldree once again proves he gets the tone of his world and its characters. Honestly? I liked this one even more than Legends & Lattes.

We follow Fern, a gloriously foul-mouthed rattkin, who gets swept into a chaotic journey alongside a legendary warrior and her goblin prisoner—Zyll, who immediately claimed a spot as my favorite character ever. Seriously, I need a Zyll spin-off. Immediately.

There’s heart, humor, and just enough emotional growth to keep you invested. Watching Fern step into her own was both hilarious and surprisingly touching. So many laugh-out-loud moments—I didn’t want it to end.

If you liked the cozy worldbuilding of the first book but wanted a bit more chaos and edge, this one hits the mark.

4.25 stars...first off thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this audioARC of the book. I loved it. This one is centered around Fern, the ratkin/bookstore owner from Merk. This was a cozy little adventure, our favorite characters all make an appearance but it's mostly Ferns adventure. There's some new characters as well, a somewhat midlife crisis, lots of swordfighting, books of course, bounty hunters, other mystical/supernatural creatures. I would definitely recommend this whole series to people. It's a fun time and the characters are great.

So I dove into this new books in the Legends and Lattes series with no real idea of what it was about. When Fern arrived in the city of Thune to establish her new book shoppe, I was excited - I would get to revisit my friends from the first book again. And then I realized I had no idea what I was in for, as Fern falls asleep in the back of a wagon belonging to a legendary elven warrior and is carted out Thune and away from the story I thought I was going to read.
And it was delightful!
Fern, a ratkin, tried moving to Thune to restart her life. Instead she remained dissatisfied and restless. One bad decision later and she's more confused and now a bit lost and stuck with a legend, a chaos goblin (ostensibly her captive, but...) and a some talkative weaponry and the chance to figure out what she really needs in life.

Leaning a little bit away from the cozy, and more into the fantasy, B&B was a delightful adventure!

Thank you to NetGalley for audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.

3.5 stars - I like this series and this author is so imaginative. He should name all animals in every book because Bucket and Pot Roast, come on!! I listened to the book on audio and was surprised to hear the author narrating it. He did a great job. I do wish I would have read the book instead, as I had a hard time focusing and was confused a handful of times.

Definitely a cute book but like the others in the series better. I recommend reading a summary of Legends and Lattes before starting as there are some overlapping characters.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audiofor providing me with an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Travis Baldree and Tor Publishing for the ARC copy of this book. I had the privilege of reading this book early and being a big fan of the series thus far I was excited to see what the characters were up to after Legends and Lattes. The prequel book Bookshops and Bonedust did a great job in setting up Fern and how she got to the point where she is in this book so I strongly recommend reading that prior to this book.

As the book started I wasn’t sure how I felt about the story of Fern joining Viv and opening her own bookshop as it seemed pretty obvious that she didn’t want to do so. And then it dives right in to Fern getting herself in a bit of a pickle and finding herself in the back of a cart ages away from her new home and everything she knows. But this is exactly the point where the story picks up and really kicks off.

The story of the elven legend who is seeking the bounty of a goblin and everything that happens in between and for a super fun story with a lot of heart and self-reflection. The bond that forms between all three, though takes a while, really pass off at the end and I hope in a future book within this world we see all of them cross paths again. Travis did a great job and developing Fern from this lost character to someone who takes control of her own life, which in large part comes from her adventures on the road.

The best part of the book is the goblin as it’s mischievous nature just has you wonder what they’re up to throughout the whole book and then once you realize what their story is it all makes sense. The trouble they get into on the road only adds to the story and adventurous nature of the book. This is a very light-hearted read and one that takes you into a whimsical world of creatures.

4/5⭐️

I was as excited to return to the world of Legends & Lattes as most of you probably are and I'm glad to say that Brigands & Breadknives did not disappoint. Fern was a fun character in Bookshops & Bonedust and I'm glad she's back in a main character role this time. The cast from Legends & Lattes do show up for a little bit, but the majority of the book takes place away from their giving us an opportunity to see more of the world and get know to a whole new group of characters (although I'm still a little sad about the serious Pot Roast deficiency). The new cast is great and I feel like most of them could support books of their own. I especially love the sapient breadknife, Breadly. While still retaining the cozy feel the series is known for this book does have more action and stakes than the previous entries, which might not be to everyone's preference, but I thought the mix still worked well. As expected from Travis Baldree, the audio narration is excellent and while I intend to buy a physical copy, I think the audio experience is superior.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! This book had me smiling from the first two pages.
Obviously, I’d say at least read L&L before because reading that will make you even smile more while reading this one.
I was worried for what a third book would be esp since Travis had expressed wanting to leave it at L&L but this one did not dissappoint

A necessary continuation! This series is my all time favorite, but felt very complete after Bookshops and Bonedust so I was terrified that this would feel like a forced sequel, but it was so worth it! I realize now this universe has endless possibilities and so many characters to explore. As always Travis Baldree takes special care to look at a story from every direction and pay attention to every little detail. Five stars. Always.

Fern is back for the third adventure in the cozy fantasy that began with Legends & Lattes!

Fern has packed up her bookshop and moved next door to her friends' coffee shop, but is it the life she really wants, or the life she's supposed to want? After a drunken misadventure Fern finds herself accompanying a (reluctant) legend and getting farther and farther away from her friends and the bookshop. As Fern runs toward adventure, making new friends along the way, she learns to let go of her own expectations and see what the world has to offer. This was a delightful adventure, leaving plenty of room for more to come from Fern.

As always, author Travis Baldree is a fantastic narrator, doing his story justice!

I have listened to all 3 books in this series now on audiobook and Travis always does an EXCELLENT job! I love when the author narrates because they know exactly what inflection, emotion, etc to make.
I loved Fern's story and although I would have been just as happy if it followed the same path as Viv, I enjoyed this extra bit of action and new characters we got to meet. Can't wait for the next one!

What happens when you don't know what your purpose is anymore and you've already tired moving to be near your found family? Get drunk, end up on the back of a cart and beg a legendary adventurer to take you home on course!

I struggled with this book for a while. I loved the other three books in this series and thought of them as cozy fantasy so I expected more of the same from B&B. While I would still call this a cozy fantasy because the scope is limited to our group of travelers some of the situations they find themselves in are quite dangerous. I would call this entry more of a cozy lite. Once I figured that out I really settled in and enjoyed B&B. I loved foulmouthed Fern the ratkin from the prequel and was excited to follow Fern in her own adventure. Seeing some characters from previous stories and experiencing how Baldree wove them into this new tale was amazing. Astrix made me both miss Viv and fall in love with this new adventurer character.

While it may not be my favorite installment of the series it was still fun and I will definitely continue if Baldree decides to write more stories in this world.

Thank you for the advanced audiobook copy.

While I liked the author's narration, the book's lack of focus made it dull, and I was ready for it to finish.
