Structured into thematic chapters, and chapters into brief parts, this is an engaging exploration of fatherhood in art (and religion and other areas which influence art, and that art influences back).
At times, The Art of Fatherhood reads like a detailed exchange, a long series of conversations between the authors, and a podcast.
The opening letters as well as the end notes were curious. I had not known the meaning behind a particular song mentioned in the end.
As for the chapters, we learn about the changes in representation of and reflections on fatherhood in art and the insights range from philosophical to practical, deep to popular. There were a few times I chuckled and others, where I felt my knowledge expanding.
If you think you are not scholarly, do not fret because this book is accessible, timely, relevant and the writing is fun.
As much as I understand that this is an academic book relevant to the general reader, I wish there were two or three pictures in each chapter that illustrate the ideas represented.
4.5 stars.
