From the title, I expected this book to be about farming, and the first third focuses on the author's experiences growing up among four generations of dairy farmers. From the time he grows into a young man, the author embarks on a type of "choose your own adventure" story, exploring passions in more than half a dozen states. The strengths of the memoir include recollections of varied experiences in many creative disciplines, from pottery to culinary arts. At its heart, the book reminds readers that life is meant to be fun as well as serious.
At times, I wish the author would have included more specific details of incidents, instead of merely summarizing the action. Also, there were moments where the memories seemed too loosely connected, and I found myself searching for a fine point or key observation that seemed to be missing.
Overall, I would recommend this book to someone who is feeling a bit lost in life. If a reader enjoys hearing stories of the lives of past generations, then this book should satisfy that desire. The message is that by setting goals and making conscious decisions, one can experience life in meaningful, enjoyable, and unexpected ways.
