I would give this book a 3.5. It's marketed as a mystery but doesn't read like one. It reads like a historical fiction, and I am most likely to recommend it to those who like historical fiction. The story follows two women (a carer and a resident of a nursing home) tormented by a stranger in another room, who become friends and share their respective stories. The carer just got out of prison and the resident lived through WW2 and has her own secrets from the era. It reads like "modern woman who has her own story learns about a WW2 story through an old person" and not "there's this awful tormenting mystery happening, who is tormenting these women and why".

What an interesting novel. A combination of historical fiction with mystery and intrigue woven in. The dual timeline lends itself to a very interesting story.

Belinda is a women who finds herself in a terrible situation. She discovers her husband has cheated on her, and in a fit of anger, she pushes him, and he hits his head. Belinda ends up in prison for her crimes. When she is released from prison, she forges documents to say she has a clean record, and ends up working in a care home where she meets 98 year old Mable.

The story alternates between Mable telling Belinda her story of growing in war torn England in WWII, and Belinda telling Mable her story of living in prison and her life before and afterwards.

This novel is packed with history, intrigue, and the complexities of relationships. I don't typically read much historical fiction, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. In this story history meets current day with Belinda in the present, Mabel in the past and the Stranger in Room Six, the person who ties them both together. What went on in Mabel's past that now has Belinda scared for her own life and family, and who is the stranger in room six and what do they really want? An interesting, fast paced read that picked up even more the last half.

This was a good read. I really enjoyed both of the storylines as well. Belinda's story really annoyed me though because it felt like such an injustice.
