It’s on You by Nick Chater and George Loewenstein is a sharp and eye-opening critique of behavioral economics and the “nudge” movement. The authors break down how, for decades, corporations and policymakers have shifted responsibility for society’s biggest issues onto individuals, instead of addressing the systemic forces driving them. From retirement planning to climate change, this book argues persuasively that nudges are not enough—and often serve as a distraction from deeper policy reform.

Like many fact-driven books in the business and social science space, the writing can feel dense and dry at times. Still, the message is powerful and worth sitting with. The evidence presented is thorough, and the way the authors connect the dots between behavioral science, corporate interests, and political agendas left me thinking long after I finished.

What I found most fascinating was the way this book reframed problems I’ve always thought of as personal failings—like saving for retirement or managing health. By showing how the system is designed to keep individuals shouldering the blame while powerful players profit, Chater and Loewenstein reveal just how much larger the picture really is.

Overall, It’s on You is not a light read, but it’s an important one. If you’re interested in business, economics, or social change, this is a must-read that challenges the way we think about responsibility and reform.
