I just finished Forty Love by Jane Costello and I had so much fun with this one! It’s like if your favorite rom com grew up, hit perimenopause, and decided to serve up a second chance romance with a side of tennis and midlife chaos. The main character Jules is so relatable it almost hurts. She’s in her 40’s, a single mom juggling work, a hormonal rollercoaster, and a daughter backpacking across the world. I loved how honest and funny she is about it all, and how she doesn’t pretend to have it together. Plus she fully owns that exercise still sucks even with a hot personal trainer cheering her on! The tennis element was enjoyable even though I’ve never picked up a racket in my life. It’s more of a backdrop for Jules finding new friendships, confidence, and joy rather than a serious sports thing. This book felt like a reminder that it’s never too late to fall in love or try something new. It’s light and funny but also touches on real things like anxiety, parenting, aging, and just feeling stuck sometimes. If you like rom coms that feature women in their 40’s doing the absolute most and still not always getting it right, this is for you!
