What a great way to teach children about the many emotions they have. First a short story where a character needs to make a decision about how to react in a difficult situation. Then the reader can choose what they will do next, turning to that page and reading the outcome of their decision. As a SPED teacher I would use this book in my classroom for sure.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.

I read this with my nine year old tonight and we both thought it was okay. I appreciate the message but the stories were missing something. Both of us thought it landed in and 2.5/3 star range.

Thanks for the opportunity to read and give my honest review.

This book caught my attention with its “choose-your-own-adventure” format. Children struggle with understanding that they can choose their response to a challenging situation. As an educator, I will read this book to students and use it to teach them to respond more appropriately to their peers. The scenarios in the book are common situations that elementary students face. I would recommend this book for grades 3-5.

This book was so cute and full of helpful information I wish I had when I was little. It teaches how to handle emotions and calm your thoughts in a way that’s easy to understand. I really believe this book could be helpful for any child (or even adults!) who needs a little extra support navigating their feelings.

Book 142 of 350 ~ 2025

🌟🌟🌟🌟

A clever choose your feeling and find out the reaction book. Cute illustrations which to me had subtle nods to Quentin Blake.

I received a complimentary copy of the ebook. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book was both cute and educational for me and my child. We are always talking about these methods to stay calm so it was fun to see them in a book with cute pictures to help.

This book is equal parts adorable *and* helpful!

In a classic choose-your-own-adventure style, the reader is given different scenarios where they can either pick the slug or bubble outcome; that is, a slug reaction (impulsive, reactive, annoyed, frustrated, embarrassed, etc.) or a bubble reaction (understanding, compassionate, humorous, forgiving, etc.) With each scenario and reaction, we learn how a simple reaction can sometimes dictate a whole day!

This book is a smart, fun way of introducing children to the concept of choosing how to deal with unpleasant situations — and the illustrations are so cute and nostalgic! Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Calm
A Choose Your Own Attitude Book
by Gail Hayes Illustrated by Helen Flook
This is a great book for social emotional learning which is a focus of elementary school classrooms currently. This book could not have come at a better time. The book shows the children their choices to stressful situations can change the out come. It is a great discussion starter. I would also hold it for when students find themselves in similar situations to help them turn lemons into lemonade.

Jumping right into this review, I really liked the light choose-your-own-adventure style of this book. I think that it really enhances learning and helps readers absorb the message of the book in a different and more engaging way. Additionally, the author did a fantastic job of creating a clear and stark difference between Slug's thinking and Bubble's thinking. This choice was so smart because it eliminates confusion, as it gives the book an obvious "do" and "don't" format.
As for the illustrations, the artist did an awesome job of conveying characters' emotions on each and every page, and it allows readers to relate to this book in some way. Readers can easily see when readers are frustrated or anxious, but also calm and relaxed.
Lastly, it was a very smart idea to wrap up all of the coping skills in one place at the back of the book, as it gives readers the opportunity to use this book as a reference.
Bravo!
