This book looks at the life cycle of the black Rhino. Who knew that females are pregnant for twice the length of time a human is!! The photos are beautiful and the book was informative both on the rhino itself and how rhinos are becoming extinct and the reasons why. Overall a lovely book for young readers

One of a set of four books (so far, at least) that look at threatened animals, and show us their life cycle – by knowing more about that we'll care for them, we'll generate those who nurture them in the future, and so on, being the thinking. Pretty much this is all you'd need to know about the black rhino, anyway, apart from perhaps a spread regarding their anatomy and skin – so the series might not need such a specific-seeming dressing. It certainly seems to have done its job well, and I now know rhinos have to hang around with each other for a week, if not two, before the courting is done and the population growth can start to begin. So I've nothing in common, then, but I still appreciate these highly-pictorial pages for telling me what they do.

Great series for kids to learn about endangered animals. This book is informative for younger children who like to learn about animals. The rhino facts are easy to understand in the way that they are written and the book includes a short glossary, too. I think this book would be great for early elementary school students (though I also enjoyed it as an adult!)

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Black Rhino is a well written natural sciences selection for grade school readers, and part of a series on endangered animals by E.C. Andrews. Due out 1st Aug 2025 from North Star Editions, it's 24 pages and will be available in paperback and hardcover library binding.

The book covers the basics and defines all the terms and concepts in age-appropriate, clear, and accessible language. The author does a good job of explaining what a life cycle is, how endangered animals are very much at risk of dying out, and a little about what differences we can potentially make to better the chances for a positive outcome.

The book is very colorful, with clear color photos and punchy graphics throughout. The author/publisher have included some resources at the back of the book including a short glossary section, helpful hints for readers, and a cross-referenced index.

Five stars. For the suggested audience (~7-9 years) it's an interesting, factual, and well presented book. It would be an excellent choice for public or school library acquisition, for home use, or for gift giving purposes.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This is a straightforward non-fiction juvenile book that tells about the life cycle of a black rhilno, and its eating and living habits. Black rhinos are endangered and the book briefly discusses some measures that are taken to protect them (catching poachers, guarding them in a conservation park), and how we can help by not wasting paper nor purchasing items made with ivory.

While this would not provide enough information for an in-depth research project, it does provide young readers with some basic information to understand more about these important animals.

This is an awesome book that both teaches kids about the black rhino AND gives them super simple tips on how to prevent the endangerment of said rhinos. This is so important and I give a lot of credit to the author for weaving it into this educational book so effortlessly. Another great thing that the author did was going into depth without being overwhelming. Readers won't be left confused or with remaining questions, but they won't have an information headache, either, which is a great balance. Lastly, the images correlated with the writing perfectly, and I thought that the overall graphic design of this book was impeccable. Bravo!

This was an informative read that will be enjoyed by young readers with an interest in nature and wild animals. I particularly liked the way the layout meant photos of these wonderful animals were really showcased and highlighted!

It is a little bit lighter on the amount of information included than some other comparable books for younger readers, so I would recommend this for those at the younger end of the age range or maybe those that might prefer a less fact heavy read.

Thank you very much to North Star Editions and NetGalley for the ARC.
