First, I want to thank Kerry Wilkinson, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

Once again Kerry Wilkinson brings his readers another thrilling and addictive psychological thriller. The first thing that hooked me to the book was the title and the cover of the book. As a child growing up in the 80’s and 90’s I listened to cassette tapes religiously as I loved music. So, I was quite intrigued to see how Kerry was going to take me back to that time and use the tapes. Needless to say he did not disappoint.

I may be wrong but I think this is the first book of Kerry’s that actually pulled on my heart strings and could relate to. Where I actually shed a tear or two. I don’t think this was meant to happen in a psychological thriller when he was writing it but he struck a nerve with me. I could totally relate to cleaning out the character’s fathers house where he was a borderline hoarder who kept everything that ever meant anything to him. Reading this section of the book where this character heard his loved ones voice for the first time in 13 years come through. Oh the emotions I felt for this character as tears came to my eyes as I wish I could have had the same experience myself.

What was said on the tapes were shocking. There was one line that was said over and over that pulled hard on my heart strings- and I need you to know that I love you.

Kerry’s book is fast paced, twisted, suspenseful, addicting, and if you are like me it will pull on your heart strings.

This book was absolutely unputdownable. I started it, thinking I would read a couple chapters here and there, but nope, I read it all in one sitting! Everytime I thought I knew what was going to happen, I was wrong lol. I LOVE THAT! The writing was well done but there were a few times where I found it a little repetitive. I really enjoyed this and cannot wait to check out other books by this author!

This was a fun book! I enjoyed the red herrings and I didnt see the ending coming at all! I liked that Eve struggled with her own demons and was in imperfect character just trying to do her best. I'll definitely be checking out other books by this author!

Eve is clearing her father’s house when she finds an old cassette player and set of tapes. As she starts to listen to the tapes, one catches her eye with her name on. Her mother’s voice comes on the tape saying that if she’s missing then she has been murdered. Eve is desperate for answers, but the more she listens the more secrets she discovers. What if the killer is still out there?

This is my first book by this author, however the premise of this one really piqued my interest and I know I had to read it. The idea of solving a mystery through old tapes seemed original and wistful in way. Even though the story starts in an interesting way, I found my engagement then starting to drop as the story becomes repetitive with a sense of it being overly long. I found the main character didn’t really do a lot for me either and felt a bit flat. Overall this wasn’t a bad thriller, just one that I won’t remember easily. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.

This is a good mystery thriller.
Eve has the awful job of clearing her Dad’s house after he has died. She comes across some old cassettes that her Mum had recorded on when Eve was younger.
Eve’s Mum has been missing for sometime and she becomes enveloped in listening to her voice.
She then comes across a tape where her Mum says, “If they say I’m missing, I’m not. If you’re listening to this, I’ve been murdered.”
Eve is left shaken and struggles to think what to do at first, but she soon realises that she needs to listen to more tapes to get more information.
The book starts off strong but wasn’t quite as gripping as I thought it would be.
It’s a good mystery but not one of my favourites from this author.
Thanks to Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.

I found it pretty hard to get through the book. The narration is disjointed and the book excerpts featured chapters disturbed the flow of the book further.

The story and the plot itself were pretty solid. However there was a lot of monotonous narration which lost me quite a few times in the book.

Easy read thriller, ideal as a beach book for summer holidays, or to while away the hours on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.

Eve find some cassette tapes while clearing out her dad's place, one has her name on it. Her mom recorded them, she plays the one with Eve written on it, her mom says if she dissappears she's been murdered. This gripping novel is well written with well drawn chracters and the plot keeps you reading till the end. Thanks to Bookoutre and Netgalley for this review copy.

I was impressed with this book. While this is my first read from Kerry Wilkinson, it wont be my last. The book was very gripping, I couldnt put it down in the last third of the book! Although the beginning did not immediately hook me, that quickly changed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

This was a pretty interesting concept. It reminded me a little of Thirteen Reasons Why in a good way.

I liked that the main character had flaws and she embraced them. She didn't feel like a cookie cuter protagonist. I often felt sorry for her and hoped the killer wasn't someone she was ose with for her own sake.

Once the killer is revealed, the plot moves very fast, in true thriller form, and I couldn't put it down.

The writing style threw me a few times. Things would get exciting and the chapter would end, I'd flip the page and it wouldn't pick up where the last chapter left off. It was very jarring to me and it took me out of the story a few times when I would flip back to make sure I didn't miss something. This happened a lot throughout the story.

I wish we heard more from the tapes. It felt like we get snip-its from them that moved the plot along but it would have been interesting to read more of what the tapes said instead of how the killer was revealed.

Overall, I had a good time.

This was an enjoyable, quick read. I always enjoy stories where someone finds a hidden diary (or tapes in this case) and am amazed at the self-control to not binge it all immediately. I guess it wouldn't be much of a story if they lacked self-control 🙃

Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for this eARC for review. All opinions are my own.

What to say on this one…
It had great potential. The pacing was off for me, it was a little repetitive, and the ending a bit rushed.. That being said, I did enjoy it. I think for someone who’s just entering the thriller genre, it’ll be great.

This one was interesting! Loved the plot and the characters. It was a little slow in places and I wanted a few more details! Good read!

The Tapes by Kerry Wilkinson is a heart thumping ride. This was such a propulsive thriller. When Eve returns to clean out her late father’s house, she finds a box of old cassette tapes. On them? The voice of her long-missing mother, claiming she knew someone was going to kill her… and that she knew the identity of the infamous serial killer who was never caught, nicknamed the Earring Killer.

What follows is a fast-paced, twisty search for the truth; Eve, not exactly a reliable narrator herself due to her alcoholic history and shaky recovery, dives headfirst into her mother’s past. As she starts unraveling secrets, she learns shocking things about her father, begins suspecting everyone around her… and people start dying.

I could not stop reading. I had to know what really happened to Eve's mother and who the killer really was. I guessed part of the twist, but another piece totally blindsided me. The ending felt a little clumsy, but honestly, it didn’t take away from how gripping the rest of the book was.

A fast, bingeable read that’s 100% worth your time. Can’t wait to read more from Kerry Wilkinson!

The Tapes by Kerry Wilkinson had a promising premise, but the execution didn’t work for me. The pacing felt slow and I had a hard time connecting with the characters and staying engaged in the story. While it wasn’t a fit for me, I’m sure others might find more enjoyment from it, depending on their tastes. Didn’t finish at 18%. Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley & the author for this advanced copy (which I’ve managed to finish just before release). I really loved that this book got right into the story and that we didn’t have to wait for the reveal about the tapes, it got me really intrigued by why they had been left and finding out the mystery. The writing was easy to follow and for a good 75% of the book I just couldn’t put it down! Overall I think I would’ve just liked more twists/suspense throughout the book as the end felt quite rushed and confusing at times. Overall would still recommend as it’s an enjoyable read!
