I really enjoyed getting into this world and the romance element in this world, the characters were so well written and enjoyed the fairy tale feel of this book. The overall feel had that concept that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall romance element in this. The characters were so well written and enjoyed how good the overall feel worked in this. Alexandra McCollum has a strong writing style and was glad I was able to get to read this.

Into the Midnight Wood opens in a contemporary fantasy setting exploring queer identity and love. While I could not say that this is strictly a ‘cozy’ fantasy read as the stakes feel higher as readers are exposed to themes of trauma and heterosexism. Additionally, my personal consideration of a “cozy fantasy” leaves the reader deeply entrenched in a fantasy setting while still holding lighter tones of soothing peace and found family. I will note that McCollum did create a loving found family experience with enough of a juxtaposition to expand the feeling of comfort for Meredith and David. Additionally, it was enjoyable to read alongside the grumpyx’sunshine’ (wink wink) relationship. This novel goes on to show the process of learning to love one another and oneself.
This was an enjoyable read that I consumed in just three days and would love to see more from this author. I think that this would be a beautiful read to add to ones self if in search of more queer fiction particularly with gender expansive characters and gender expression. Additionally, it explored gender expression and gender expansiveness in a beautiful and respectful manner that seeks to question the status quo and oppressive systems.

Yessssssss, loved it. The vibes of this book are immaculate, and I would love it as a fall/winter read. The magic system in the story is well detailed and makes sense, which is huge bonus points from me.
