Napoleon is always a fascinating figure, but Mansel's book really soars when it puts the spotlight on the lesser-known characters that populated the emperor's world. The work's focus on Napoleon's second wife, Empress Marie Louise, gave the text a fresh feeling, helping me to better understand a woman who is often overshadowed by her husband and her predecessor. Recommended.
