The authors vivid description of sights and smells made me feel as though I was there with Robert and Matt. The research done to make this book historically accurate shines clearly through the story of her ancestry.
Robert and Matt are brothers from a great family and like many of us that upbringing didn't prevent them from being deeply flawed like many of us are. I found myself rooting for them to find their way and hoping things ended well for them.
The Choctaw characters were introduced thoughtfully and respectfully which you don't always find in historical stories.
The author has me hooked- line - and sinker. I can't wait for the sequel. Will there be a redemption for the brothers ? Will there be fallout for their transgressions ? I wholeheartedly cannot wait to find out.|

This could have been a good book but when the author sexualizes 12 and 13 year old girls, while the same men doing this comment on a 13 year old boy being too young to play cards it becomes problematic. I certainly understand older men married younger girls in the time this book place but this took it too far and did not just state a 15 yr old was marrying a man but made sexual comments toward young girls.
