My son has always been curious about "animal doctors" and this one really helped him understand how veterinarians help them.

This one was so cute!! Then only thing is that I would afraid of kids trying to stick things in their pets afterwards while playing vet.

This is a cute informative story for kids to learn about sick pets and what happens at the veterinary office. The illustrations are adorable and there is a glossary for vocabulary building.

Great book to help children recognize signs their pet may be unwell! The glossary in the back was a very thoughtful addition as well as the note to adults. This book would make a great gift for any animal lover! I think it also would be great for any child that wants to be a vet when they grow up. Super cute illustrations and the story line was effective!

This is such a lovely and informative kids book.
My kids enjoyed this and the cat reminded them of one of our old cats who used to get sick when he was stressed.
The illustrations in the book are beautifully done and any child I’m sure would enjoy looking at them as they tell the story very well.

3.5 🌟 I can see that this would be a great resource for kids who have sick pets or even just with getting to know what happens when their animal friends visit the vets.
It has some lovely illustrations and draws from some excellent knowledge of veterinary practice.
Some work could be done on the font and presentation of the text to make it flow a bit better.

This was a fun read - especially as a cat lover. The fun use of medical/anatomical vocabulary is a very nice touch to add. The rhyming and pacing were enjoyable and kept a nice rhythm to the story. A wonderful book to read to children or any pet owner. This story depicts a very true and honest reality for pet owners in a fun and light hearted story!

My kids really love animals and they were really excited to read a book about a cat. This book was really informative on how to deal with stress not just for cats, but for humans too. I think this would be a great book for a kid that wants to be a veterinarian when they grow up.

There were some cute humorous moments in the book, but it felt that it dragged on if it is geared towards a 3 years old.

This is about a cat who gets sick and needs to get help. This is a good book for anyone who has a pet and they can see how a vet takes care of a pet. The book has a glossary at the end that shows the definitions of any words a child might not know. My problem withe the book lays in the format. On Netgalley Reader there were words that were obviously white on white background because I could not see the words. I sent the book to my Kindle and found issues. The pages have a big white thick line in the middle. Most pages, the top part was the top of the page and the bottom after the white line was the bottom. Sometimes the bottom part was part of the top and the bottom. It made trying to read hard.

it was a cute story for children that give information about animal care in the back. I will say the format of this book needs to be fix for e books have to flip the page back and forth to get the full picture and to read the story was a little annoying

I like that it is informative about being aware of the situation if your pet is having troubles. But the things is the illustration is very trippy, the blurred background with white text makes the words invisible and makes me dizzy while looking. Though the drawings of each characters were great. I hope they can make some adjustments on the digital copy to make words visible.

What Wrong with Tom is a children's book about a family cat who feels ill after moving. It's definitely a mixture of factual and make believe, which you would need to clarify to younger readers. You learn a bit about veterinarians and how they help pets, but the way in which they figure out the cat's needs is not real. It's an easy enough read and the illustrations were very cute.
Thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.

This book is good if you want to have it to give out at a vet’s office, but it’s not necessarily something you would see in a bookstore.
I’m not sure what age group is the intended audience for this is as the storyline seems simple, but towards the end, the information gets very technical (i.e., medical words in a glossary and how to spot a urinary obstruction in cats)—is this for the parents?
It’s also a bit jarring for this to be a story helping kids identify if their cat is ill, but in the story, there’s an imaginary device so the cat can just speak and tell you what’s wrong.
The art was fine. The font was not.
What’s Wrong with Tom? will be published August 19, 2025

A cute story that explains the emergent treatment of feline interstitial cystitis. It does a great job of showing the compassion and care Tom receives while at the vet. This book has great illustrations. It also has great summaries at the end.

This book was a lot of fun. I attempted to first read it with my nearly 3 year old and he did start to loose focus about half way through so is possibly still a bit young although he loved the pictures. My 6 year old enjoyed it and he is really into learning new facts at the moment ao the glossary at the back was really great for him.
The rhyming made this a wonderful story to read out loud and it flowed really nicely too. The cat sounds kept both of my boys engaged and they wanted to join in! The words were at about the right level for my 6 year old to be able to read a lot of it himself which he loved.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I read this book with my son. We enjoyed it and he loved the pictures of the cat. We also have cats and recent vet visits, so it was nice to explain more what happens with the pets when they go to the "doctor". I would buy a copy of this book to read again.

This is such a fun book to read! As a cat lover, I can’t pass up a children’s story like this one and I’m glad I read this to my twins. The rhyming story is perfect and I like hours the author also makes it educational with a little veterinary medicine

'What's Wrong with Tom?' is such a cute and informative book, especially for those cat-loving kiddos among us. When our big ol' orange boy Tom wakes up one morning, he isn't his usual playful self — he's in pain and not at all looking good! With the help of an imaginary translator and the real-life Critter Care Crew, Tom is able to tell everyone what is happening and they're able to get him back on his pouncing little toe beans.
This is great introduction to what veterinarians do (and I loved the representation of a Black vet!), as well as a common issue with boy cats. As a cat mom myself, this was all too relatable information and I love how it was told in a rhyming, engaging way.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

What’s wrong with Tom is a sweet story about a cat who wakes up one morning to find that he is not feeling well. His loving family calls the vet and takes him in for emergency care to help him feel better. After medical attention and a night at the vet’s office, Tom is good as new. This book is creative, informative, and interesting for kids. It shares introductory information about what veterinary medicine is, conditions you might see in a cat, and terminology commonly used. It also shares an important messages about compassion and empathy for pets! Overall a cute story. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC in return for my honest review.
