Another great journey with Nic Blake! The Book of Anansi is just what every middle schooler needs! The adventure is so fun with so many new and exciting characters!

I have been long awaiting Book 2 in the Nic Blake series and The Book of Anansi did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoy the ways that Thomas weaves didanctism, radical thought and Black diasporic folklore to create a narrative that is engaging for all ages of reader. A master class for middle grade fantasy..

I have anxiously been awaiting this sequel and was so excited to read it! And I was not disappointed. I love the Remarkable world that Angie Thomas has created. Now that Nic has been reunited with her mother and brother, she is now getting ready to attend school where she can learn how to use her Gift. However, she has a run in with a group of mysterious Manifestors who blackmail her - they will reveal her secret regarding the Manifestor Prophecy unless she finds and delivers them The Book of Anansi. Nic, her brother Alex, and her Unremarkable best friend JP band together to try to find the artifact and protect Nic's identity. And much like in the first book, we meet a variety of different magical folk, and revisit some favorites from the first book as well. I am so excited to share this sequel with Nic Blake lovers and recommend the series to those who haven't yet experienced it!

This was a really good second installment in the series. I think that Nic had a lot of character development in this one and we as readers got to know a lot more information about the world and all the different kinds of beings there are.

Book 2 of Nic Blake and the Remarkables really ratches up the tension and the adventure! Nic is now living in the Remarkable world but it still doesn’t feel like home. Nic, JP and Alex have to deal with going back school, new friendship dynamics, out of control powers, overcontrolling grandmothers, threatening messages and prophecies.
Nic has a lot on her plate but it’s great that she can always rely on her friend JP, her newly reunited brother Alex, and new friends at school. She has a lot of balls in the air and every moment is filled with excitement, worry or betrayal.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children’s Books for this DRC.
