I finished this audiobook a few days ago, and is still circulating in my noggin’. Time to pay rent, Mr. Tingle!
(Jk 😘)

🎙️5 ⭐️ narration:
I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator’s voice! She did a great job of keeping the dialogue interesting and alive with her performance.

This book is meant to be propulsive, zany, and lively, and she didn’t miss a beat. 🏆

Lucky 🍀 Day is the first book I have read by this author, but it won’t be the last! I already have one of his backlist (Bury Your Gays) on my shelves raring to go.

💭:
What can I say except that I loved this book! I’m not finding it easy to review due to the complexities, and the wildness of it.

Complex as in a little absurd (but intentional) and over the top - with the writing giving the reader a lot to think about.

I found the use of satire and dark humour, to show the flaws in our society, to be evident.

𝙽𝚘𝚝𝚎𝚜 𝙸 𝚓𝚘𝚝 𝚍𝚘𝚠𝚗 𝚊𝚝 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚎 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚒𝚗𝚐:
-The writing is smart, with a unique premise
-Chuck is a master storyteller
-horror in all of its glory
-If I were a zombie I’d eat his brains.
-I want to live in his mind
-Reading his book (to me) is like meeting someone that would get me in rl.

Chuck Tingle books are always an adventure, and this one definitely is! The audiobook is narrated by Mara Wilson, and she did a fantastic job. Vera is a bisexual statistics professor with a fiancé that her mother thinks is just a phase. She survives a horrific global catastrophe, and then kind of gives up. The events of that day were absolutely absurd, so the book starts out with a bang. If you like horror, sci-fi, and a little bit of the absurd, you will love this book. You will also love Chuck Tingle in general.

Lucky Day was so messed up in the best way. The deaths….death by monkey holding typewriter, death by salmon falling from the sky, and my favorite, the casino pool,

The low probability event caused massive destruction and death and now people are trying to recover. But how do you recover from knowing that anything can happen?

Story, characters and narration were fantastic!

Bury Your Gays was one of my favorite reads of last year so when I saw this book, I immediately jumped on it.

The premise of this is really interesting, on one very special day, the things that are almost improbable all happen at the same time with disastrous results (my personal favorite is the Hamlet monkey with the typewriter).

This is a horror story, but its more importantly about grief, about being true to yourself, about taking the bad with the good. The last hour or so of the audio was fairly impactful. I cannot relate to Vera's specific situation, but I have felt like I didn't belong, or that maybe 'what's next' has to be better than this and her realizations at the end hit hard.

This is fun, gory, funny, and weird. If any of these things sound good to you, read this.

This was a fun one, and if you’re in the mood of an adventurous read, this would be up your alley. I can easily see it becoming a mini-series. I quite liked a lot of the descriptions of the Low Probability Event and just the pure chaos, and I really liked the main character. A lot of good, interesting conversations were had with regards to sexuality, but otherwise, I just felt like it hit some level of cliche by the end. I wish this had went more horror than adventure. It felt horror in the beginning with the descriptions, but then I think it leans more sci fi / adventure vibes as the book goes on, and that just wasn’t personally what I wanted. It was a good time, and I really loved the audiobook... It just wasn’t quite what I was expecting, so that’s why it’s only a four.

I really enjoyed the narrator. She was perfect for this character. This book really had me thinking deeply about life and luck and everything in between. It was a wild ride, but I really enjoyed it.

I listened to this one as an audio book and I’m glad I did.

I feel like I was able to get into the story so much better as an audio compared to myself reading it with the way this storyline went. I loved the narrator as well.

This story was absolutely insane. It was a perfect combination of horror and dark satire. It had points where it was terrifying and points where I literally laughed out-loud, while also being terrified. I have no idea how he came up with the idea for this but it’s unlike anything I’ve read previously and I loved it the entire way through.

Vera is at a brunch celebrating the publishing of her new book when all hell breaks loose. The world seems like it’s ending as everything turns to chaos and multiple people die in front of her from planes falling from the sky, cars crashing, and runaway apes. They call it the “low probability event” where several million people die all at once from random incidents at the same time. After the event, where Vera watches her mother die right in front of her, she isolates herself at her mom’s old house. She spends all her time avoiding people and sulking. A government agent shows up at her house one day asking for assistance and she’s suddenly thrust into an investigation where she’ll uncover things she never thought possible.

This book was so fun and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!

Vera is a talented statistician out with her friends and her mother to celebrate her book being published only for fish to fall from the sky and for the biggest swing of bad luck the world has ever seen. I one afternoon 8 million people are gone. Fast forward 4 years and Vera has become a shut-in at her mother's cabin, when an agent from a shady government agency comes knocking at her door.

I've read all of Chuck Tingle's full-length books. I enjoy his interesting takes on things and Lucky Day did not disappoint. While the book is a thriller and I love that aspect about his writing, I also like that the longer you sit with one of his books the more threads you start to see. I also appreciate that he is slowly building this universe where all of his stories exist.

I love Chuck Tingle and I did enjoy this book, but not nearly as much as his other horror books. This was SO WEIRD and a little too sci-fi for my taste, but it was unique and entertaining.

A fun and freaky one! I saw another review on StoryGraph that compared this to an X-Files story, and that totally clicked with me and made me realize that's what I liked so much about LUCKY DAY. It's really giving those 90s/00s sci-fi procedural vibes with the signature spark of existential dread that circles around to meaning that I've come to expect from Chuck Tingle. I loved going on that journey with Vera! And even though a lot of what happens here is extremely gory, it's so outlandish that it didn't gross me out. Also, Mara Wilson crushes the audiobook! Totally recommend.

If you’re looking for something surprising and weird and you don’t mind gore, this might be up your alley. It was a bit too surreal for me, and definitely too gross with the vivid depictions of violence, bloodshed, and eldritch horrors. It was interesting, and I was curious about where the story would end up, but in the end, it was too dark for me; I didn’t find it a pleasant experience. Perhaps I should stick to cozies.

Kudos to the author for writing a story with a main character who is a bisexual woman and a former professor of probability and statistics. Unfortunately, she was so depressed and nihilistic for most of the story that I couldn’t relate to her. The story also features Denver, a savvy businesswoman running an incredibly successful casino, who I found funny. However, the character who I initially liked best was Agent Layne, with his love for new experiences and aggressive pursuit of pleasure. I won’t say why and spoil the story, but the ending disappointed me.

The audiobook production was excellent, and I enjoyed the narration by Mara Wilson. She’s fun to listen to, with good pacing, clear pronunciation, and distinctive voices to suit the characters. She’s able to convey the mood, emotions, and humor of the story effectively. The story works very well as an audiobook.

Recommended for fans of campy cosmic horror and those seeking something unusual.

Macmillan Audio provided me with a free review copy of the audiobook through NetGalley. I volunteered to provide an honest review.

Lucky Day by Chuck Tingle 🍀🎰🃏 pub day is this week, August 12th! Thank you @macmillan.audio for the ALC!

The audiobook is narrated by Mara Wilson. I always enjoy her as a narrator. It’s a pretty good audiobook! If you are an audiobook reader like myself, you will enjoy it! The book will certainly be a bonkers wild ride of a read in any format though.

The main character of the book, Vera, has survived a global catastrophe that killed millions of people. You get to experience this event in the beginning (first 15-20% or so) of the book and it’s honestly just non stop chaos and over the top violent death scenes. The second part of the book is about her working with a government agent to uncover the connection between an unusually lucky casino in Vegas and these deadly, absurd events. I have the synopsis on the second image if you want to read it. My brain is not in the right mode today to write a quality book synopsis 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣.

I have enjoyed all of Chuck Tingle’s novels (the trad pub ones, I have yet to dive into the Tinglers) and I think this was my least favorite of the three I’ve read. I still enjoyed it though. It was quite the experience.

Do you like to gamble? I don’t really, but like if I ended up at a casino I wouldn’t mind playing slots for a little while. It would be a situation where I had $40 and knew I would leave without it 🤣

Vera's life is going well. It's her b-day, she's about to be published, she's engaged... and then her life implodes. To be fair, she's not alone. Across the globe, millions of are people are affected by a series of random, bizarre events. In Vera's case, the bizarre event ended in a crash killing her mother feet away from her, after a devestating argument.
Vera retreats from life, to her mother's house and basically fades away. Until Agent Layne Shows up, needing her help as an expert consultants in statistics and probability.
And then things really go off the rails. Layne, and his offshoot government agency, have no rules...so so Layne just barrels through. Vera is beginning to emerge from her numbness to become interested in the case. The rest is rather delightfully indescribable. It's an amazing, wild ride that I cannot recommend enough!

I absolutely loved this book and how it spun horror on its head. What if the scariest thing is Nothing? It had a bit more gore than I like, but it definitely built to the fear of the Low Probability Event. Surprisingly hopeful, I would recommend this to any horror fan that needs a little inspiration in these dark times.

”Reality is cruel and the void is the relief…”

Vera is celebrating with brunch when the unthinkable happens: a global catastrophe that truly needs to be read about to understand it. Referred to as “The Low Probability Event”, Vera is left feeling hopeless and at a loss to see the meaning of anything in life. When government agent Layne appears at her door asking for her expertise, Vera puts her knowledge of statistics to work.

Chuck Tingle always tells one hell of a story, but this took it to a new level! This mixes in a bit of sci-if with the horror and while I usually am not a sci-if reader, I absolutely loved this! Vera and Layne have a strange yet endearing partnership as they work together in attempts to save the world. For a book that spoke a lot about statisics, it truly evoked so much feeling too. My heart went out to Vera, as she navigated hopelessness and trying to find the purpose in all of it. Unique, refreshing and downright strange at times, this was the book I didn’t know I needed to read!

“Lucky Day” is out NOW! This review will be shared to my instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly :)

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC audiobook of Lucky Day!

This one took me in waves... it felt like the book had several sections, and I felt different things about each of them. I loved the set up/ intro, but then got lost in the whodunnit adventure of the bulk of the book, but then the end had me right back in it! I would give this somewhere around 3.5 stars, but it doesn't feel like a 4 star for me.

I loved the narration - Mara Wilson has a smooth and sexy voice that made everything 100x better. I loved the themes of nothingness, persistence, and this struggle between caring and not caring. The book was giving final destination ass chaos energy, which was fun and gory and wild. But after the 10th iteration of rube goldberg it started to get a bit repetitive, even though it was consistently innovative and zany.

The final chapter/ ending really brought everything together for me, in a way that I wasn't expecting. I was kind of slogging through some of the middle of this book, but then end left me feeling hopeful, and made me think and feel and wonder.

This book is amazing so , a strategist survives a day of mass improbability that includes great loss, and is pulled from her agorophobic lifestyle when an fbi like group pulls her in for assistance when there may be more to that day...

(Great bisexual rep so far as well)

Tw: ||black cat death|| , gore, final destination worthy incedents

Overall of you want final destination to be more gay... this is your book

My favorite Chuck Tingle book so far! Chuck Tingle seamlessly blends humor and horror in a wildly entertaining story. The horror was bloody, but not overdone. And the bizarre events were horrific, but somehow silly. The production for the audiobook was great. The narrator did a fantastic job. I cannot wait to share this with all of my followers!

Chuck Tingle is becoming an auto buy author for me. I know I am always in for an inventive and entertaining pilot when I pick up one of his books. This was no exception. The way the low probability event played out was thrilling and a little disgusting to experience. I was consistently surprised by the number of ways he found to take people out. I really enjoyed Vera as a character. She was a bit of a mess but still very smart. I enjoyed watching her get completely broken down and the moves she made to try to come back to herself. Agent Layne was another interesting character. Seemingly affable but with much more under the surface. I really enjoyed how the overall plot played out. It was almost cinematic to experience and I think this could make a very interesting adaptation. I loved the audio of the book. Mara Wilson has been a favorite of mine for a long time and I really enjoy her audiobook narration. She adds a lot to the storytelling with her performance.

I loved Bury Your Gays and was super excited for Lucky Day (I mean, that cover is everything!!), but ultimately, it just didn't hit the same for me.

I really enjoyed the first 25% or so; but the book takes a sharp turn from the beginning and becomes completely something else. Not always a bad thing, but for me, it just felt like it lost its purpose and became something I wasn't really interested in. I liked the main character, but I felt like I couldn't get close to her and that the character development stopped after a while and none of the other characters were developed. I loves the statistics discussions and I love the idea of the "low probability events," but even that didn't feel fleshed out enough.

I'm still a Chuck Tingle fan and do see that this has lots of rave reviews and clearly has an audience; but it certainly isn't a favorite of his for me.
