Chick Tingle is quickly becoming a favorite author for me. No one is writing like him. The way he blends genres and tells relevant stories in a new way is so impressive.

I love chuck tingles writing so much! You always never know what to expect and he’s so creative. I’ve read so many books by this author and this one is just as great as the rest!! The narration was good too. 😊

Chuck Tingle has done it again with this absurdly great book! This was wild from start to finish and I devoured it. I thought the story line was unique and the characters were very interesting and realistic. It was silly, scary and fun! It has good bisexual representation. Mara Wilson was a fantastic narrator! I felt that her tone, character voices and talking speed worked very well and kept the story going. I did not feel the need to speed up this audiobook. I was kept interested and wanting to know more the entire time. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook!

This was my first Chuck Tingle book and my goodness, what a ride it was!

Vera is a statistics and probability genius who is coming out with her first book. What starts as a nice evening with her friends, fiance, and mother, quickly turns sour. Vera and her mother get into an argument right before the whole world goes to hell. We flash forward four years to find a very different version of Vera. An agent from the Low Probability Event Commission partners with Vera to help him solve the events of the tragedy that occurred on that fateful day.

The book starts off with a bang and I was blown away by the introduction to this story. I wasn't sure what type of horror to expect, but this was the perfect balance between gruesome and macabre, while still being absurd and surprising. The outlandish events were unfolding and I was hooked.

We spend the rest of the book unravelling the mystery and boy do we go on a journey. Mara Wilson did a fantastic job narrating the story. I loved this book from start to finish and I can't wait to read the rest of his work.

3.5

When I pick up a Chuck Tingle horror book, I except a well written story with something to say that will also creep me out (in the best way). This book has the classic Chuck Tingle style in it. The writing is engaging, I felt like the characters were real and tangible, which is a one of Chuck's biggest strength. And the topics of grief, biphobia, and how can humans live within this vast universe were perfection. However, on the horror end, I didn't connect with entirely and it's driving me nuts that I can't pinpoint why. I was expecting more than what I got and that's on me. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book to all.

Side note: I listened to the audiobook and it is fantastic! Highly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of the ARC and ALC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

4.25 stars!

This was bonkers!! Chuck, how do you even come up with this stuff??

Following the Low Probability Event, Vera believes nothing truly matters anymore. When she’s approached by an agent to investigate the cause of the event, it leads her on a crazy journey that questions her belief.

This book was equal parts absurd and horrific, which made for a very entertaining ride! I loved seeing the high and lows of Vera’s story, and the ending was satisfying! I feel like I can’t say too much more without it being spoiler city, but whatever you are imagining about this book, trust me that it is even wilder than that!

The audio format of this was also great! The narrator really did a good job with all of the emotions that went into this crazy story!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC!

Ok let’s start this off with flowers for Mara Willson.

I think I could listen to her read the dictionary and enjoy it.

Vera in particular benefits from her narration pushing her over the line of (understandably) frustrating to charming. It helps you root for her even as she choses to be selfish in ways that are both tragic and understandable but also infuriating.

This is my first Tingle book and although i have heard the hype i was a bit worried thats all it was. I am pleased to find that the rumors are true. Tingle is a talented writer who delivers horror in a gleeful manner of someone who loves horror.

There is not a mean spirited bone in this books body and it lets the reader relish in the gore and absurdity.

If you like Keith Rossons Fervor house and the final destination movies i think this will be a perfect for you.

This was absolute chaos in all the very best ways. It’s the perfect mix of horror and sci-fi, Final Destination meets the X-Files. Yet there’s always that extra layer Chuck brings us–he truly is a master of this genre. It was brutal gore mixed with heartache, social commentary, existential dread, and a search for the meaning of it all. Chuck gives us another fantastic main character with complex emotions, experiences, and decision making processes that thrust the plot forward and kept me engaged the entire time as she sought out injustice and an answer to why this was all occurring. I was rooting for Vera but I was also rooting for society.

I really felt for Vera–shutting down after the Low Probability Event and isolating herself after losing friends and family to something that statistically should have never happened? Her apathy, heartbreak, emptiness, and aimlessness were so well crafted and powerful. This made it all the more fulfilling and heartwarming as we watched her slowly reconnect with society and build a relationship with Agent Layne throughout their journey into the WHY this all happened.

I was absolutely captivated by all of the creative ways Chuck found to give people their final moments. Truly, it was a trainwreck (speaking of, I think this may be the one catastrophic event we didn’t see) that equally made me queasy and also made it impossible to look away (or in my case stop listening). I couldn’t wait to see how things played out with the casino and world and sci-fi building was phenomenal. I began to put the pieces together on how this may end but let me tell you, Chuck still had some tricks up his sleeve and I absolutely did not see our major plot twist coming.

I really enjoyed the audio and even though it’s a single POV, Mara Wilson did an excellent job narrating this one and truly brought all of the characters to life. I was fully immersed in the emotions and if you have the option to listen rather than read, I highly recommend. As always, Chuck has given us a horrific, brilliant, thrilling novel that I’ll be thinking about for a long time to come.

Lucky Day

Thank you @torbooks for the gifted ARC! Cheers to me for reading my first Chuck Tingle book! I’ve had Chuck’s erotica on my TBR for the longest time but due to the lack of audiobook accessibility I simply haven’t found the time to read them! I was lucky enough to get the physical ARC and Audio ALC for this book and it was MINDBENDING!

The way I’ve been describing it is “Everything Everywhere All At Once meets Men in Black but make it Queer” and I truly stand by that description. I thought the take on “plot holes” is absolutely genius and it’s a wild, gruesome ride from start to finish. There is a fair amount of open mindedness folks need to have when diving into books that cover multiverse theory/time travel/other physical anomalies and that proves true here as well. You will be saying “huh??” multiple times as you read but everything is explained in earnest later on.

The body horror in this book was absolutely disgusting. I had my hand over my agape mouth several times. It’s truly an acid trip (as described by @connor because I’ve never done acid lol).

Ultimately, I interpreted this story as a conversation about how capitalism kills the individual in pursuit of individualism and obliterates community while at it. Vera’s journey after facing immense loss is relatable despite the stakes being a little different than real life.

I’d recommend Lucky Day to folks who enjoy the unexpected in sci-fi timelines, those who can stomach some rather gruesome body horror, and those who love Lucky Charms cereal!

I have such mixed feelings about this book. First, I will that say it is very well written. I think the discussions surrounding grief and biphobia were thoughtfully executed, which is something that I've come to expect after really enjoying Camp Damascus and Bury Your Gays. I also enjoyed the humor paired with high stakes situations. I love a book with gore, but it is nice to have humorous parts mixed in every now and then to break up the seriousness of the situation. Agent Layne's somewhat goofy personality created an interesting dynamic when paired with Vera's type A personality. My only real issue with this was the Low-Probability Event. This very well could just be a "me" problem, but it was just a little too unrealistic. I understand... low-probability probably equals absurdity... but I think the absurdity was what kept me from loving it. For the audiobook, Mara Wilson did a great job delivering an exciting narration and never disappoints. I will still read (almost) anything Chuck Tingle writes. He's a fantastic author with a clear message that needs to be heard.

Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and the author for providing the ALC copy of this book!

The core of Vera's journey is existential, not just scientific. She’s someone who lived by predictability. Her identity was wrapped in the comfort of order, numbers, patterns, and probabilities that offered a framework to understand the universe. For her, life made sense because 2+2 was always 4. It had to be. But the Low-Probability Event shattered that. Not just her life, but the very rules of reality. In a way, it's not just a catastrophe , it's a cosmic betrayal. The universe broke its contract with her, and now she's left in a world where chaos can manifest violently, unpredictably, and without reason. That’s why Vera’s arc is so compelling. This isn’t just about saving the world , it’s about reconciling belief in a rational cosmos with the intrusion of surreal, almost magical randomness. And it's through that lens that Chuck Tingle does something really profound: he explores grief, trauma, and meaning in a post-truth world, all wrapped in a genre-bending horror-thriller. In Short its about a -

A woman who believed in math faces a world that’s rewritten the equations, and the answer isn’t just wrong; it’s alive and trying to kill her.

And still, she persists. She tries to draw a line, to map chaos not necessarily to win, but to understand. That, in itself, becomes an act of faith.

I tried my hardest to get into this book but it was ultimately not for me. It was a little violent and absurd for me. I did however love narrator Mara Wilson. She did a phenomenal job.

What happens in Vegas definitely doesn't stay in Vegas. Vera does statistics for a living so she at least has some insight into the Low Probability Event that killed so many. But after the disaster, she is depressed and keeps to herself until a government agent needs her help.
This is such a wild ride. There were a few times where I didn't believe what I was hearing, and the horror was intense. And hilarious.
Chuck Tingle has a unique style where he tells the weirdest stories but they're also unique. Thanks to NetGalley I got to listen to the audiobook, which was amazing and helped keep the excitement up.

This book was gnarly. This was my first Chuck Tingle experience, and I'm sold. This book was bananas in such unexpected and awesome ways, I found myself constantly turning on the audiobook so I could keep going. I saw a lot of other booksellers saying this reminded them of X-Files, and I totally see it. Everything that happened was so ridiculous, and at times so off-putting, I found myself laughing and cringing in equal measure. I'm really looking forward to diving into his other novels now, he really sold me. I loved how sci-fi and weird and camp this horror was. I'll definitely be on the hunt for more works like this in the future.

Thank you Chuck Tingle, Macmillion Audio, and NetGalley for advance listener copy in exchange for an honest review.

Did I enjoy this ride? Absolutely! There's a lot of gore and OMG moments as far as horror goes. There was plenty of times I had to rewind because I was like what just happened, did I hear what I think I heard lol.

However, the story falls flat. There's was a lot going on at the end while also not fully answering questions which I think was the point so just be prepared to be confused. I wasn't fully invested in the characters but I was invested in the plot sad it ended lackluster like.

FMC was a bit annoying at times. I'm over Chuck doing a coming out scenes for his queer characters especially for older queer characters. The grief reaction was a bit of an overreaction for the difficult relationship (trying not to give spoilers) and to cut off a relationship that meant so much because of it.

It's an interesting story and enjoyable but not my favorite of his books. Solid second though.

The narrator is phenomenal. The production is great!

Horror novels by Chuck Tingle seem to be rather hit or miss for me, with this falling somewhere between.

Lucky Day follows Vera on the day her book is released, where so many freak accidents cause massive deaths around the globe, which seem to be suspiciously connected to an incredibly lucky casino.

I found the story difficult to follow at times, with a mix of statistics, grotesque descriptions, and a plot that seemed to ebb and flow throughout the course of the novel. I know this book will have it's readers, so I cannot discount the fact it's not totally for me.

One of the most unique books I've read in recent memory! I enjoyed the creativity of the "low-probability event" and its aftermath, and I think the characters were very interesting. It was very fun to try to work out what was going to happen next; I was almost never correct, which was fun.

I loved the audiobook narration by Mara Wilson - it was very well-performed and the style of Vera's voice was extremely apt.

I was expecting the book to be more statistics/probability focused, and the main character to be a bit nerdier. Instead, it was most philosophical than expected. This wasn't necessarily bad, just different than expected.

Overall, it was a fun, quirky read I'd recommend to anyone. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.

For fans of the shows Fringe and X-Files.
This story is weird and unhinged in all the best ways. Tingle writes horror that is perfect for people just getting into the genre. If you were a fan of the horror comedies of the early 2000's you will love this.

I loved Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle so when I had the opportunity to get Lucky Day as an ARC I jumped on it. I listened to the audiobook and I really liked Mara Wilson as the narrator.

It was entirely unique and super weird. I both loved and hated Vera, all while hoping she would succeed in saving the world.

I would recommend to fans of horror and sci-fi.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC.

Book Review - Lucky Day by Chuck Tingle

I have loved both novels by Chuck Tingle, but nothing could have prepared me for this book. It’s surreal, scary, funny, sad, every emotion you can think of is contained in this book.

I think it’s best to go in relatively blind but, it essentially follows Vera, a brilliant statistics professor, first as she survives one of the most insane and horrific days imaginable, a worldwide cataclysmic event known as the low probability event that left millions dead.

Later, a cynical and depressed Vera is enlisted to help find out why this event happened, if it could happen again, and if it can be stopped. Her journey will take her from despair to hope and back again multiple times, and the reader is always right there with her.

It crescendos to an ending that, while perfect, definitely got me in my feels. Don’t miss this one, out August 12th!
