This is a very short read, and I dearly wished it was a bit longer! My only real gripe is that the ending was a bit strange and abrupt, but then I suppose that’s reality.

It’s interesting that this is so similar to the previous book I read, but where that one was very dry and text book like, this was engaging and I didn’t want to put it down, and was sad not relieved when it ended. I enjoyed the way the author visited the real places that his grandfather and family had been through, and especially when he discovered that his great-aunt’s story, being raised by the nuns, was so famous in the town!

This is a clear, enlightening, deeply moving account of a man’s search for the truth about his relative’s experience of the Holocaust. It’s beautifully written and carefully referenced, giving life to the information so carefully and thoughtfully researched and shared. The retracing of steps by the author was a particularly fascinating part of the story and I found the cross referencing to modern experiences both relevant and troubling. I was a little disappointed when I finished reading as I would have liked to know more about Louis’ life in America, but perhaps it is too soon.
