This is the third book I have read in Bec Pope series and it was on par with the others. Great characters and storyline. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing. Look forward to the next offering. .

3.5* Parts were good, but the killer was not at all believable. The case should've been solved a lot earlier with simple investigating.

This is a mixed book, with Pope having issues with relating to the people in her life (job plus past trauma), with what seemed initially to be a serial killer (pretty decently done in the first instance), with red herrings that segued pretty well, but then came the killer. Whose story should've been debunked quickly and efficiently with the aid of social media, which probably around 85% of the world, at least, pour chapter and verse of their lives onto. How, why, didn't the police immediately go there? They belatedly sussed all wasn't well but by them the killer had morphed into a Scooby Doo-baddie caricature, with loud proclamations and telegraphing their next steps, that Pope didn't cotton onto.

The ending didn't make me want to read more, as it wasn't punchy enough. Stuff got hinted at, as did Pope's emotional thawing, but still, the book wasn't executed well enough for me.

Thank you to netgalley for allowing me to read this book. It was a great story. I do get a little tired of the trope of the busy detective being misunderstood and made guilty by their SO. I would recommend this book. I may go back to read the first two.

Detective Bec is a great character to come back to. shes such a gripping character all on her own. put her in this role and im all in. shes is strong, determined and always intent on catching the bad guys. she might need all her wits about her for this one. and maybe not being so blooming head strong and going gung-ho without either her team or thought for risk or consequence! in this book you have to take a deep sigh as this woman needs this break. but oh no that doesn't look likes its going to happen. and the boss with a body and his career the only thing hes bothered about is not a boss she can cross right now. so back to it it is then?
this is a pacey book that introduces you to the first event on entering the book. so you are right amongst it from the get go. there seems an uncertainty in the team at one point because they hadn't any clear leads.i often read these parts in books and think that must be utterly frustrating. if you really do feel like you've got nothing to pull on what then? at least this didn't happen for long for the team because then something comes up and they are hard at it and so the pace picks up.
there is more to come and you might see some things coming, figure it out alongside the team but i bet you wont see it all. you wait! there is far more to come from this team, for this team yet...
another solid book featuring this detective and her team. ive really liked getting to see their side of the story as well as the main plot and thats my fave kind of detective book.

DI Pope is about to board a plane with her family for a welcome holiday, when she is called back into the office following a rather gruesome murder. A young man is found with an inverted pentangle carved into his chest, post mortem so we immediately get dragged down the satanism rabbit-hole. He's gay to boot but, thankfully, that wasn't emphasised as a potential reason. Number 2 man is then discovered with similar carvings, his girlfriend is distraught. Pope has a good team although still missing her DS killed in a previous book, his replacement is a young inexperienced woman but she soon fits in and is a welcome addition to the team. As usual, appalling boss who wants fast answers on his climb up the pole and has little sympathy for anyone else but himself. Usual twists and turns, lack of forensic evidence then the killer starts to taunt Pope. Pope's family on the meantime take her very work-oriented focus on their stride but she does come over as selfish in this respect although some guilt is there. First for me although third in a series. Not a problem. The rather abrupt ending certainly implies a 4th book sometime. Mixed feelings on that - crime horrific but well detected, murderer with very weak motive so presumably mental issues will be brought in somewhere, Pope's family and relationships taking too much space. 3.5* but can't quite upgrade to 4*. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

I really liked Jez Pinfold's The Midnight Killer. I hadn't read the first two books in this series, but I didn't feel like I missed too much. I liked these characters and how they interacted.

I felt the pace of the story was good and held my interest. The protagonist, Detective Bec Pope, is a compelling character whose determination and resilience come through as she grapples with a chilling case. She finds herself drawn into a murder investigation that is both perplexing and deeply unsettling. The discovery of the first victim in a serene Bloomsbury cemetery, complete with a pentagram carved into his chest, sets the stage for a series of events that kept me interested in the storyline and outcome. I felt the story was paced well, with twists and turns that were surprising and plausible; however, the reasoning behind the murders was a bit weak.

Overall, The Midnight Killer is a well-crafted thriller. I am interested in reading more and discovering what happens to Bec and Alex! I would recommend this book.

Not bad of a read. It was very suspenseful and it was a wee bit slow during the investigations but it did have some thrill and the ending probably gives it away that this story is not over. I do recommend this book and the author. Thank you NetGalley for another great read.

I'll be honest—The Midnight Killer left me feeling conflicted, and I found myself having to push through to reach the final page. As someone who devours thrillers regularly, this was definitely a borderline 3Ps read for me.

The book opens with a promising premise: a young gay man is brutally murdered on his way home after celebrating a career promotion with colleagues. It's a visceral start that immediately grabbed my attention. However, the next scene introduces us to DCI Bec Pope, who's about to board a plane to New York City with her partner Alex and his children when duty calls.

Here's where I found myself nodding along with Alex's frustration—she's supposed to be on holiday! Like any reasonable person would ask: what if she'd already been on the plane? What if they were already in New York? Would the case really have fallen apart without her specifically? Sometimes the dedication to duty in crime fiction stretches believability, and this felt like one of those moments.

Once Pope arrives at the crime scene, the investigation takes an intriguing supernatural turn. The victim bears an inverted pentagram carved into his chest, leading the story down a rabbit hole of occult research and references to Aleister Crowley. As someone fascinated by the intersection of crime and the esoteric, I was genuinely interested to see where Jez Pinfold would take this angle.

Unfortunately, this is where The Midnight Killer completely lost me. When the killer's identity and motivation are finally revealed, I couldn't help but think: "Seriously? This is why that innocent man was murdered and mutilated?"

The motive felt frustratingly weak and underwhelming—hardly justifying the elaborate occult staging and brutal violence we'd witnessed throughout the book. As someone who reads extensively in this genre, I expect my endings to pack a punch, to make all the preceding darkness worthwhile. Instead, I felt genuinely let down by what felt like a lazy explanation for such extreme actions.

That said, Jez Pinfold did manage to redeem himself slightly with the final scene between Alex and Bec. Their relationship dynamic provided a much-needed emotional anchor that pulled me back from complete disappointment and reminded me why I'd invested in these characters.

While The Midnight Killer had moments of genuine intrigue and solid character work, the weak payoff ultimately overshadowed its strengths. For thriller fans seeking a satisfying conclusion, you might want to look elsewhere.

This is a very good read with interesting characters, especially DCI Pope, although I hope Fletcher doesn't hang around for too long.. I like the addition of the new character to the team and I am sure she will fir in fine. The storyline is a bit unbelievable but it is fiction after all, so buckle up for a thrilling, suspense filled, fast paced read in this ever improving series, one which I would recommend to lovers of crime thrillers. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

My favourite genre - as well as a female lead.
Detective Bec Pope is a headstrong, driven detective, intent on catching the killer. No matter what the consequences are.
One of her family members has already been in the line of fire, and for six months, Bec paid the price for that.
Now there is a new killer, and because Bec is looking for the killer, her family are yet again at risk.

I read the second book in this Bec Pope series recently, to get a background on Bec. I did enjoy it, but it was a little repetitive.
This third book could be read as a standalone novel, but I am pleased I read the previous book.

I really like Bec, she is honest and doggedly goes after the criminals, and she has a great team (new member introduced in this book), but she often goes off and does her own thing without considering the fallout.

I liked this book, the second half seemed fast paced compared to the first, probably because the team had absolutely nothing to go on. No DNA, no motive, no suspects. Once there was something, Steve finding out by digging, the book hotted up considerably.

I really, REALLY do NOT like the boss. Fletcher!!! I hope he is replaced!! Ugh. Wanting results yesterday. He irritates me beyond measure.

I recommend this to readers, Bec hasn't yet reached the top 5 of my favourite detectives, but one day, she might just do that.

Huge cliffhanger in this book though, so looking forward to the next.

I would like to thank NetGalley for having this avalivale for me to read!

This one wasn’t my cup of tea.. I got bored extremely fast. But I’ve been having trouble with thrillers lately.. could be me really.

This is the third in the DCI Bec Pope series and is a good read. Previous books in the series had more plausible storyline I felt and this detracted from my enjoyment. I enjoy the work/life balance that is explored in the series and the addition of a new DS is a good move. I will read more in this series

It was a fun read. Definitely engaging and fast paced. The detective aspect is something that I always enjoy watching in tv series but this was my first time reading in a book and I really had fun. If you like crime mystery with great team work it will be a fun read.

Although the third in a series this works as a standalone novel. The set up is promising: two murders committed at midnight and each with an inverted pentagram carved on their dead body. But the story arc is rather pedestrian.

There is a lot of character development, and much of the novel is spent on the officers' relationships outside work. The plot os thin though and it feels like a missed opportunity to build on the initial crimes.

Brilliant police procedural featuring DCI Bec Pope and her team who are on the trail of a murderer with a penchant for the occult…. I didn’t realise this book was part of a series and I am intrigued to read the previous instalments to understand further, the character development and context. I read this gripping story in one sitting. I really enjoyed the team dynamic and the impacts on their personal lives. Highly recommend and thanks to the author and publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review

While the city sleeps, a killer strikes! Detective Bec Pope is waiting in Heathrow departures when the call comes in: a body has been found in a quiet Bloomsbury cemetery. Her long-overdue holiday is over before it begins. It’s no ordinary crime scene. The smartly dressed young man hasn’t just been murdered. The killer has left a message a pentagram, brutally carved into the dead man’s chest! Fantastic thriller!! This book had chilling suspense, gruesome murders, mystery, fantastic characters, serial killer, and a few jaw dropping moments! The storyline was very interesting! I highly recommend reading this book! Thank you NetGalley and Joffe books for sharing this book with me!

Once I picked this book up, it totally consumed me. I ended up reading it in one day as I was so absorbed by what was in front of me and what was going to happen next! This book is an absolute must-read.

A massive ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars!
