This is my introduction to the world of Gemma Doyle and her Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, but this is the 11th book in the series. So, I need to catch up!

The introduction was hard going. Fans of the series likely breezed through but I found the description of our main characters and setting confusing. First chapter is all internal dialogue (save one random exchange) from a scattered mind. We have layered birthday parties and weddings, cats and dogs, various relatives, future plans and past memories, all taking place in a Baker Street which is not Baker Street in a London that is not London. The purpose is to get the reader up to speed on the book's world, but it wasn't inviting to me as a newcomer to the series. Overall, there are just too many people and too much description to keep track of!

Also lots of repetition and editorializing and not much action. But plenty of withholding info from the police. Does seem to be an agenda here, either on the part of the author or the character, not wanting the police to solve the mystery.

There's plenty wrong with this book. The writing is repetitious and full of unnecessary details.

At the top of chapter 13, Gemma is convinced the death is accident and suicide but everything she does is a murder investigation. A few pages later she is certain of the murderer. Then a few pages after that, she's back to insisting it's suicide or misadventure. The motives are inconsistent.

The ending is unsatisfyingly vague in at least one respect (no spoilers!) and seems simply to say Gemma was right all along and we don't really need to prove it. Also, problems that seemed so urgent earlier in the book simply vanish.

This is a cozy mystery for readers who want to immerse themselves in the world of Gemma Doyle and aren't much fussed about the mystery or the story. The book grew on me, but I probably won't be reading another in this series.

I have read a few other books from the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop series. I love the consistency of these stories. The seaside town of West London has wonderful sunsets. Jayne and Gemma have their partners’ meeting at twenty of four. And the shop cat is named Moriarty, since he doesn’t like Gemma very much. A friend smiled knowingly when I explained the cat’s name, but I recently found out this was Sherlock’s archenemy. Each story stands on its own.

Gemma is a quarter partner in the tea shop next door and best friends with Jayne, who runs it. Jayne’s birthday (and Sherlock’s too) falls days before her wedding - this novel's release date should be no surprise. Fiancé Andy throws a big dinner party to celebrate. A mysterious wedding crasher appears to take the last seat at Gemma’s table. Jayne’s ex is working the party as a waiter. The party includes a cast of characters old and new, varied in age and occupation as could be. When things go wrong, Gemma follows her curiosity to make sure her friend and her fiancé make it to the altar on time.

This is a cozy after all. Gemma and Detective Ryan make it back in time for the reception, while Uncle Arthur sends love from Majorca. And I learned a little more about Sherlock. Great story!

I received a complimentary copy of #TheDevilintheDetails, thanks to #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Devil In The Details is the eleventh book in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery Series and the first one that I have read. As a big Holmes fan, the setting and premise quickly drew me in. Gemma Doyle is part owner of the Sherlock Holmes bookshop and also partners with her best friend, Jayne, a very talented baker. A shocking death outside Jayne’s birthday party has Gemma putting her sleuthing thinking cap on. There was no shortage of suspicious characters. I really liked the flow of the plot and how the author described the scenes and people. The variety of interesting and quirky characters kept me guessing as to whodunnit. I plan on reading more of the books in this series.

Jayne is getting ready to marry Andy. At her birthday celebration, Andy's ex dies. Later on, Jayne's ex turns up dead. Gemma gets involved in solving the murder or murders. At the beginning she doesn't think it is a murder. But as the story moves along she isn't sure. I have enjoyed this series but this was not my favorite. Gemma is always so sure about her convictions and she is right. This time she does some stupid things. I felt like at the end some things did not really make sense the way the were explained. If you just want a light read without much thinking this would be great.

The Devil in the Details is the eleventh book in this delightful Sherlock Holmes mystery series. Gemma's friend and business partner Jayne is celebrating her birthday at her fiance Andy's restaurant. Tensions rise as both of their ex'es manage to show up. When Andy's ex drowns in the ocean and the police suspect him of murder, Jayne begs Gemma to clear his name. With the wedding only a week away, time is of the essence. This book had a pretty good pace and was full of red herrings. As always, I enjoy reading how Gemma solves each mystery with her sharp observation skills. Im looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Gemma is excited. It is her business partner's birthday, and the wedding of her partner is less than a week away. The bookstore is running smoothly and Gemma is excited for the birthday party that Andy is throwing at his restaurant to honor Jayne. But things don't stay smooth Jayne's ex show up at the party as a waiter and Andy's ex crashes the invite only gala. Soon, both exes are dead and Gemma in her Sherlockian manner runs through the clues to find the murderer. Gemma's boyfriend detective is in the story as well as principal detective Estrada who doesn't always appreciate Gemma but is learning that Gemma sees things and accounts for every detail. A good read. Thanks to NetGalley for the arc.

The Devil in the Details is the 11th book in the Sherlock Holms Bookshop mysteries. I have read this series from the beginning and have enjoyed every one of the books. It takes place in the town of West London on Cape Cod. The main characater is Gemma Doyle who is part owner of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium located a 222 Baker Street and 1/4 owner in Mrs. Hudson's Tearoom with her best friend, Jane Wilson. The other half of the bookstore is owned by her great uncle Arthur Doyle. He also is a secret partner in the tearoom. Ryan Ashburton is Gemma's boyfriend and lead detective with the West London police. There are other characters that make up the town; Ashleigh, Genna's main employee at her shop along with Gale. Moriarty is the shop's c The rest of the characters are there to add to the story, There are two different stories that become one. Jane and Andy, who are getting married in 6 days and who murdered Andy's ex-girlfriend and Jane's ex-boyfriend.

Sherlock Holmes and Jane celebrate their birthdays on the same day. Andy Whitehall owns the Blue Water Cafe. a restaurant, and Jane's fiance. They are getting married in six days. Gemma is the bridesmaid and Ryan is best man. Andy is throwing a birthday party to celebrate Jane's birthday. Mrs. Ramsbatten is Gemma's next door neighbor. She invites Gemma to join her in her taxi to go to the party. Andy was not attending as he was away at a seminar. Irene Talbot is a reporter for the West London Star.

Gemma and Mrs. Ramsbatten arrive at the restaurant early. She runs into Robbie Ellis who is an unsucessful artist who use to date Jane. He is back in town for the winter helping his mother for a few months. He is a waiter at the party. Gemma has not really liked him and was glad when he and Jane broke up. To Jane's surprise Ashleigh is also a waitress. Andy needed extra help so she decided to help and make some extra money. Jane arrived at the party with her brother, sister-in-law and mother. Everyone is enjoying themselves during the cocktail hour. Andy tells everyone to be seated for the dinner. Gemma joins Mrs. Ramsbatten at her table. She introduces everyone. Donald Morris is Gemma's friend who likes to dress like Sherlock and knows everything there is to know about Sherlock Holmes.k George Friedman is Andy's friend. He owns other restaurants and Andy had worked for him. Bunny Leigh is a retired singer who is also Ashleigh's mother. Audrey Whitehall, Andy's great aunt along with her honory granddaughter Madison. She use tobe a gossip columist in hollywood. There is one empty chair which is eventually taken by Tina Armstrong, Andy's ex-girlfriend who came to the party uninvited. She had come hoping she could talk Andy to come back to her. Andy saw her and came to the table. He was not happy to see her. While at the table George implied that Andy made his success of himself being lucky. Always at the right place at the right time.Knows the right people. He referred to the fire that burned the restaurant when ownedby the previous owners. Gemma was not happy with wnat he was implying and wanted to tell Jane about it.

Jane got her chance to speak to Jane and they went out on the deck. While on the deck they noticed that the gate to the dock wass open. They also noticed a body in the water. Gemma and Andy both .dove into the water and upon turning the body over they realized it was Tina Armstrong. They got her to the dock. The police came along with Detective Louise Estrada, Andy's partner. She was not surprised to see Gemma at the party. She and Gemma had an unusual relationship. Trisha Whitehall, Andy's mother, told the detective that Tina had not been invited to the party as a guest. She was the former girlfriend of Andy's. Estrada told everyone to stay in the restaurant and she would be back to interview them. When she got back she informed everyone that Tina had not made it and was dead. She interviewed everyone and let them go except for Gemma and Andy. Gemma told them that she believed that Tina had committed suicide but Estrada thought it was murder.

Gemma decided she wanted to speak to Robbie. She went to his apartment but he didn't answer his door. Gemma decided to go to the back of his condo and when there noticed that the sliding door was open. She started to climb the wall but someone was running out of the condo and knocked Gemma down. He ran to his car and left. Gemma decided to follow him but stopped as she felt it was too dangerous. She called Ryan and told him and told him she was going back to Robbie's apartment. When she got there Ryan and Estrada were there. They went in and found Robbie dead. The next day Jane called quite upset. She said the police had taken Andy to the station and interviewed him. Jane was afraid that the police thought Andy killed them both. Gemma decided she would do some detective work and find out who had killed both Tina and prove that Andy was not the killer. She decided to speak to everyone that was at the party.

This is where the story takes off with all it's twists and turns. There is so much to tell that I will leave it to the reader to enjoy to the surprising ending. The second part of the story of Jane and Andy interwines with the first and is a surprising ending also..

a cozy mystery with a dash of modernity! thank you Netgalley for the arc. i had just come out of reading an epic fantasy novel, so this short and quick read was perfect as palate cleanser. i enjoy mysteries, especially whoddunits and so this book was no exception. vicky delaney's the devil in the details, is fast paced and hooks you in. though the actual mystery didn't take place until we are quarter of the book in, the unspoken timeline of 6 days to uncover the truth behind the deaths keeps you on your toes. you want to solve it. you cannot wait to figure it out. Gemma and a lot of other young characters speak like old women so that's my only point to take note of. i love the concept of sherlock Holmes bookshop mysteries. reminded me of boxcar children's mysteries!

#TheDevilintheDetails #NetGalley is the latest book in this series to all things Sherlock Holmes.
The time is here! Jayne's wedding day is finally approaching and Gemma is beyond thrilled for her best friend.
Jayne celebrates her birthday just a few days before her wedding and when two unexpected exes turn up, Gemma fears trouble is brewing.
Jayne's ex is a server at her future husband's restaurant, and Andy, the future husband, is shocked when his ex crashes the party.
Hoping not to make waves, they both try to go with the flow, however, when someone drowns in the water, Gemma has no choice but to investigate.
This is an exciting addition to this series, and I think it may be my favorite, for now.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Gemma Doyle is a frustrating main character. She just does not seem like a good friend or boss. I do like that she seemed to realize that many of her issues stem from her insecurities due to growing up around an accomplished older sister. I really had a problem with her rudeness in this book.

Another fun visit with Gemma and her friends. Jayne’s birthday party is being held only a week before her and Andy’s winter wedding. Sadly, a death occurs at the party which sends Gemma on one of her odyssey’s for the truth. The author makes one want to visit this lovely seaside town and spend hours in her Sherlock Holmes based bookstore. As with all the books in the series, this works well as a stand alone. But, treat yourself and start at the beginning and meet Gemma and her pals. You won’t be sorry. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. The opinion, as always, is my own.

It's Jayne's (and Sherlock's) birthday and Andy is throwing her a birthday party at the Blue Water Cafe. Jayne's ex-boyfriend, Robbie, is a waiter there after returning to West London and later in the evening Andy's ex-girlfriend crashes the private party. Unfortunately, she's later found floating in the ocean just off the restaurant's dock. Was it accidental or did someone intentionally push her? A couple of days later Robbie is found unquestionably murdered in his apartment. Gemma works hard to solve the murders before Andy and Jayne's wedding day, as Detective Estrada has her sights set on Andy as Robbie's murderer.
I LOVED this book! Gemma running around town to investigate despite Ryan and Louise telling her to stay out of it. Ashleigh worried about what Bunny is getting into now. Uncle Arthur being Uncle Arthur. And of course Mrs. Ramsbatten, who I love seeing more of! Great addition to an already great series.
Thank you Crooked Lane and NetGalley for the ARC.
