A cozy mystery with a lot of heart and humor. The plot felt a bit over explained at times but the story was paced well. I loved the three residents of the Chickadee! They were colorful characters that made me want to know more about them. Cordelia was hard for me to get behind at times as a character. I loved how she bonded with Chicks and was protective of them. I didn’t like how she treated Archer all the time. I also thought they could have dealt with their budding romance a little better. It feels like the author is setting a series. I’ll definitely be picking up the next one.

This book is a cozy mystery with a lot of twists and humor. Although some of the plot turns felt a bit repetitive, the fast-paced storyline kept things moving. It took me a little while to warm up to Cordelia’s character, but I instantly loved the three residents of the Chickadee! It feels like the author is setting this up as part of a series—or at least leaving room for a sequel—and I’ll definitely be picking up the next one.

An entertaining mystery that didn't quite live up to its unique premise. Cordelia inherits what she thinks is a small motel in the tiny Texas town where she lived as a child, but which turns out to be a brothel with three remaining employees (the "chicks") who've been working there and serving the local married men for 40+ years. Then the town pastor dies in one of their beds, and havoc breaks loose as they try to cover up his death and also figure out what (and who) killed him.
The chicks were the best part of the book. They're daffy and hard to control, but they also immediately love and protect Cordelia. There's also a romance subplot between Cordelia and the pastor's son, who is now an FBI agent and highly suspicious of her and the chicks. That did not work as well. He's always getting his feelings hurt and leaving when she won't tell him what she knows. The book also ends very abruptly. The author is clearly setting up a series, but you have to give the reader some kind of resolution between books.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for the ARC to review. All opinions are my own.
