Bitter Kalli's Mounted: On Horses, Blackness, and Liberation is an essay collection following the social and cultural significance of horses within black spaces, particularly within art. The essays touch on everything from Ralph Lauren, Beyonce's Renaissance and Cowboy Carter albums, and the Saddle Club. I thought the essay on Kalli's relationship to and understanding of her femininity in the world of the Saddle Club particularly strong. The audiobook narrator-Tyla Collier-did an excellent job, providing warmth and alternately bite in the appropriate places. However all I recommend this book, especially to all of the former or current horse girls.
