This book is exactly what I expect from novels about the civil rights movement: an otherwise oblivious character has her eyes opened to the injustice of institutional racism. What there is of this book is reasonably strong. NOt only the protagonist but also her parents have an awakening. It's just a simple presentation. In a few short chapters Billie is turned to the cause. We do see the confusion brought on by generations of warped culture. Largely though its overly simplified.
