A trip through the market to get a cup of chai takes a turn when a fly decides it would like some too. What ensues is a bit of a contest to decide who likes it more!
The illustrations are wonderful with the vibrant colors you would expect from a trip to the market in India. I love the inclusion of the new vocabulary (and greatly appreciate the glossary!) Plus, there's a recipe for chai in the back. A great multicultural read!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ACR!

The story is cute, I love the idea and the illustrations are great. The issue I have is its purpose, what is the lesson? It also seems to come out of nowhere just randomly changing the plot. I know the fly came out of nowhere but I think having something to lead up to that moment would enhance the reader's reading experience.

Fly in the Chai is a humorous story that so beautifully celebrates a love for chai. It would be a great mentor text for a "small moment story."

Thank you to NetGalley for this eArc.
What a great and informative book - the glossary and recipe in the back was a nice surprise. This would make for a great storytime read for kids -- an opportunity to teach some new words and give kids the opportunity to learn about new foods and cultures.

Bright vibrant colors, whimsical illustrations, foreign phrases in different Indian dialects, and exotic wares draw you in to this story. When Nanu finds a fly in his cup of chai, he makes a new friend who loves chai as much as he does. Wait to see how Nanu shows that he loves chai the most! Complete with pronunciation guide, glossary, and recipes, this charming picture book will appeal to children and adults alike and will pique curiosity about Indian greetings and flavors.

What a funny day for chai! My three year old and I enjoyed walking through the morning market with the different greetings used for each vendor, seeing the vibrant wares and food come to life in the stalls, and meeting the cheeky fly sipping Nanu’s chai. We loved seeing how the fly enjoyed his chai morning, noon, and night with different foods and how similarly Nanu enjoyed other foods morning, noon, and night. It was a great reminder of the place chai holds in someone’s day and how it can add to our enjoyment. So all we needed to know next was… Who gets to drink the chai??

When Nanu and his granddaughter visit the market, they explore the many sights and sounds and greet their neighbors. Nanu stops for a cup of chai that promises to be perfect and delicious — that is, until they notice a FLY swimming in it! And what's worse? It's no accident: this is a MAJOR chai-loving fly! With the whole market's attention on him, how will Nanu convince this stubborn fly that it's *his* chai?
This is such a delightful book and the illustrations are such a treat! Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Beautiful illustrations, with the opportunity for young readers to learn about food, drink and culture as they follow the story. The end was a bit abrupt - did the fly get drunk?!

Zenia Wadhwani created a very beautiful book for children and adults of all ages! I appreciated the glossary in the back of the book for those words and greetings that I was not familiar with, as well as the yummy chai recipe! 5 stars all around!

A modern, international take on the old joke, "There's a fly in my soup!", this is what happens when a fly lands in your chai. U.S. readers, particularly students from my Central Illinois region either are completely unaware of what chai is, and may not have much exposure to Indian culture, or they live in an area with a high concentration of Indian immigrants, and will be deeply steeped in the culture. Either way, readers will adore this silly, short story about chai. At the end there is a recipe for chai that I can't wait to try.
An ode to a busy Indian market, with delicious food, bright colors, and even a section where the reader must turn the book sideways to read the fly's proclamation, this book will delight readers of all ages.

“Fly in the Chai” is a humorous, wholesome and pleasant children’s read. It has a good pace and cozy writing, making you want to sip a chai of your own. The imagery is beautiful and depicts the perfect story. Along the way we learn some words and about perfectly delectable dishes (I want to try them all) and an added chai recipe at the back of the book. A recommendation for readers young and old!

Funny book but also informative. I liked learning the new vocabulary. The glossary and recipe in the back were a great addition. I could see using this book as a library lesson on different cultures. The illustrations were a bit dark for me.

Fly in the Chai is funny, heartwarming, and incredibly fun to read! My daughters (2 and 4) loved the antics of the fly, and Nanu! They also loved learning about the delicious Indian cuisines in the book. The colourful illustrations add to the whimsical, gorgeous story. A must read for children of all ages!
