Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the e-arc!
I love when I get to read stories that make me nostalgic for my childhood. I had a fun time reading this and it mixed some of the genres that I enjoy in a great way. This is definitely a must read for the children in your life.

This was a fun spy story with a pretty, colourful art style. I liked the characters, the story had a good message, and there were interesting facts about spying.
I think kids would enjoy this book a lot.

A lot of kids are going to love Agent Cupcake! You have magical beasts, espionage, action, and humor packaged in a colorful, vibrant world.
The plot to uncover who is stealing unicorn magic moves along swiftly with a light anti-capitalist, pro-worker message mixed in. Characters are lovable, and their motivations make sense. Miguel worries about messing up at his new job and is also concerned about not really having any friends. That is really the only part I found lacking with Agent Cupcake.
Some of the story revolves around Miguel's inability to connect with his schoolmates. Miguel tells us that his classmates don't understand him since he's always going on about magical beasts. We don't really see this apart from one scene where Miguel has obvious anxiety talking to a classmate.
I felt like readers didn't have much context about why Miguel would act that way. Is Miguel an unreliable narrator about this part of his story (understandably so, we all have moments of unhelpful self-perception)? I wish there was one scene in the beginning to flesh out this plotline- either to corroborate Miguel's story or otherwise.
Though that's just me being critical. The story ends with Miguel starting a school spy club and connecting with his classmates.
The back matter is fun and well-executed. The art and character design are the strongest parts of Agent Cupcake. Fun visual Easter eggs are sprinkled in for kiddos who already know a lot about monsters, magical beings, fairytales, and folklore (my favorite is the Babba Yaga chicken leg taxi).
Totally worth adding to your collection!

What an absolute joy this was!
The graphics were so bold, colourful and vivid which really drew me in.
I loved all the mythical creatures featured, especially all the unicorns who were beautifully drawn!
The plot was intriguing and I can definitely see it being enjoyable for children as they can easily picture themselves as the main character.
Overall a really great mystery graphic novel for kids and adults alike!

This was so cute! I loved the worldbuilding. I think this would be a really great read for kids especially, but also for adults, as it tells a very contemporary truth : the rise of ultra fast fashion and its war on small businesses. The characters were adorable. I would definitely be interested in reading more of Miguel's adventures, if ever this became a series (which it looks like it might turn out to be),

Miguel has always loved learning about mystical creatures, so he is ecstatic when he is hired by the Mystical Beasts Bureau to be a spy. He learns he will be partnered with Agent Cupcake, who is a unicorn (which is even more exciting for Miguel). They are quickly thrown into a mission when a fashion company is using blackmarket materials. This leads to a bigger case though when it turns out unicorns' powers are being stolen.
This was really cute! I loved the idea that what we would call mythical exist in this world, and I really enjoyed the art. The main storyline is throwing some (not so) subtle shade at a big corporation that is also the name of a river and how it tries to get rid of independent artists, like the unicorns that work at Betsy (wink wink, nudge nudge). There were times I wish things had been explained a little bit more, but I might be thinking about it from an adult reader in terms of plot cohesion. It also seemed like everything happened in one day?? Maybe I missed a day break though. Despite that, it was still a fun, cute read!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

When I was a little kid, I liked unicorns so much. I even asked for one for Christmas, and this fixation never really went away. I want more books and films about unicorns, so I was so pleased that NetGalley gave me the opportunity to read this graphic novel before publication.
IT WAS SO CUTE AND PASTEL AND MAGICAL. I enjoyed every second of it, and I'm really hoping there will be a next one.
