rocky start, but wow was i amused once Rose met her nephew’s “inside dog” !! totally hilarious, tail-wagging chaos written to the tune of unhinged girl fiction

+ though it felt a little misplaced, i honestly found her random vegan recipes & food studies musings cute and part of the character building

Thank you NetGalley and Grove Atlantic for the ARC.

This was awesome! Sara Levine is so cool. I loved her first book Treasure Island!!!! and this one was just as cool. It leaves you wanting more in the best way—I want a sequel to see how Nathan is doing. It has such a familiar voice like Kevin Wilson, or Annie Hartnett. Top notch!!

Thank you NetGalley!
This book is weird which is expected for a book about a dog's soul in a boy's body. But I was expecting more horror than lit fic. I like weird books but the ending was not satisfying and it just kinda ended. I think Victor underreacted during the ending.

Thank you to Netgalley and Grove Atlantic for the ARC of "The Hitch."
I loved the cover and I'm a sucker for dogs, so naturally this piqued my interest. This was the story of Rose who is taking care of her nephew, Nathan, for a week while his parents vacation in Mexico. However, as the story progresses it becomes less about the loving relationship Rose has with her nephew, and more about Rose's lack of emotional connection with people in general.
I like stories that feature precocious children as long as they are written responsibly, yet, I can't help but feel that Rose continually comprised Nathan's emotional and physical safety with her poor judgment. I felt unsatisfied with the ending as it didn't really bring any resolution.

"The Hitch" by Sarah Levine is a darkly comedic novel that follows Rose as she cares for her six-year-old nephew, Nathan, for a week. Rose is an uptight, know-it-all eco-warrior/Debbie Downer, who can't wait to sell her yogurt company. She is also the owner of a large Newfoundland dog, which unfortunately kills a corgi in the park right as she begins her babysitting duties during her brother and sister-in-law's vacation.

After the park incident, both Nathan and Rose become convinced that the spirit of the deceased corgi now inhabits Nathan. Despite her typically rational and calculated demeanor, Rose begins to appear unhinged—but you may begin questioning if perhaps she has always been this way. If you enjoy unreliable narrators who are hilariously unaware of their absurdity and who try to micromanage everyone while avoiding their own faults, then this book is for you.

This novel is perfect for fans of messy protagonists and unreliable narrators, and it will appeal to readers who enjoy the works of authors like Samantha Allen, Jen Beagin, Melissa Broder, Samantha Irby, Henry Hoke, and Andrea Lawlor. It’s laugh-out-loud funny and delightfully unhinged.

Thank you to NetGalley, Grove Atlantic, and Roxane Gay Books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
