Gaming the System turned out to be a well written, solid romance with some angst thrown in on the side. A true opposites attract love story. Laura K. Curtis did a great job with her main characters, as well as the supporting characters that helped keep the story line interesting.
Kai and Luke aren't looking for love. They each have reasons for avoiding it at all costs at the moment. She has a bit of a past while he has wealthy, overbearing parents still trying to control his life, even though he's thirty four years old. Preparing for the worst, his sisters wedding, Luke enlists the help of Kai, the punk rocker that works at his buddy's sex shop, to throw his parents off of his back once and for all. While he managed to piss of his mother, he didn't expect to have true feelings for the girl.
"I don't fit into your world, Luke." ~ Kai
"Then I'll remake my world from the ground up so you do." ~ Luke
While he has a snotty, privileged upbringing, Luke is far from that person. He isn't looking to ride the family coattails of banker or lawyer, he's happy being a volunteer firefighter with a landscape business on the side. With his entire family surrounding him at the wedding festivities, Kai is the only person that sees the real him and he loves her for that. Colored hair and all.
Gaming the System is an insta-love story, however Laura K. Curtis makes it work. I enjoyed the push and pull of the relationship and that they finally let the walls down to give things a shot. It's a great short, sexy read.
