3.5 stars! I really liked the concept of this book. It was fast-paced and exciting, and the main characters were well-developed and, in some ways, relatable. The writing style felt very relaxed and witty in a way I was not expecting, but surprisingly suited the tone overall. The side characters were equally as endearing as the mains, and the relationships between them felt fun and authentic.

I’m unsure whether the twist was truly intended to be a twist. I think readers collectively understand the truth about these characters, so seeing it presented as a major reveal was slightly confusing to me. While the dialogue generally felt natural, some scenes lacked smoothness, and certain conversations became repetitive.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the idea and its presentation. I’m looking forward to the sequel and will definitely be reading it!

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fast-paced romantasy rooted in mythology!

When Death himself decides not to end your life at the very young age of four, all because you hugged him, what do you think will happen to you?
Liv is 24 when this book takes place. And she's been through many near-death experiences, many which should have killed her, but she never dies. She was supposed to one fateful night when she was 4, but Death had other plans. Then, a mysterious handsome man comes into the coffee shop she's been working at, and keeps coming daily for coffee for months. Until one day, she has yet another near-death experience, and he is in the right place at the right time and saves her. Nathan takes her back to his place and takes care of her. A few more bad things happen, and the story starts to unfold.
Told in first person POV, which is my favorite. Liv meets many non-human beings as she tries to figure out why Death didn't end her life that fateful night. Nathan, Death's assistant, is also trying to figure out the same thing.

There is so much world-building and way too much confusion around it for my taste. The FMC is so back and forth with her emotions, from being "woe-is-me feel sorry for me" to "I am tired of being near death and I'm not some pathetic little human let me participate in these super-human god-like things you do too." It was all too much for me. The last 50 pages were the best in my opinion. And it ends in a massive plot twist that is also a cliffhanger. This book is short, at 280 pages. It could be a quick read. But I was just left so confused by everything that had happened that I'm not sure if I'd be able to read the next book in the series.
The cover is gorgeous. I hope that the other books in this series also have beautiful covers.

I loved this book in the beginning it was really unique and interesting. After hundred pages I couldn’t get into it again and I don’t know why. I liked Nathan and Liv. Sometimes I struggled with the half truths and the communication between them. If you like adult paranormal romance this book is for you. Also I really liked the writing style.
3.5 stars but round up to 4

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from NetGalley, thank you!
Loved this book in the beginning, the premise of it was really interesting and engaging. It did unfortunately lose me a little bit mid way through and I couldn’t really tell you why.

As the story progressed and other characters were introduced, I found myself just wanting more of the main characters. I did like the relationship between the main characters, very interesting story and I will probably read the next book when it comes out. 3.5 out of 5, rounded up.

This one took me a little while to get into, but once it clicked, I was hooked. The writing is really haunting and beautiful — kind of eerie in a poetic way, which fit the story so well. Liv grew on me a lot, and Nathan is exactly the kind of morally grey, mysterious character I love. The tension between them? So good.

It’s definitely a slower burn, but if you’re in the mood for something moody, dark, and emotional with a bit of hidden humour, this one’s worth checking out. I’m really curious to see where the series goes next.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

This story is where obsession meets the afterlife—eerie, intimate, and completely hypnotic. From page one, I was pulled into a world where Death isn’t just an idea, but a man you absolutely should not fall for... and yet.

It reads like poetry dipped in shadows. A slow, aching unraveling where the only thing more dangerous than the pull of the dark is the pull between them. Somewhere in all the stillness and sorrow, a love story starts to breathe.

The MMC? Utterly magnetic. Brooding, morally gray, and laced with just enough humor to make you let your guard down before wrecking you again. The tension? Torturous in the best way.

Talk about a unique story. The cover was really what initially had drawn me in. The title was a bonus. I made the request and was approved to read. Now, we are here. A morally grey MMC with a touch her and die tendency meets found family, UGH! Chefs kiss. Absolute perfection. Every second of this book was perfectly executed. In Death’s Hands releases August 8th. If you want a quick easy read with a little angst, this is for you. As for me, I’ll impatiently wait for the next book. VERY IMPATIENTLY, MS. CAMAIL.

*♥Thank you to Laure Camail, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and Netgalley for the arc of this book in exchange for my honest opinion♥*
In Death's Hands is a darkly compelling story with a great atmosphere!
I’ll admit, I struggled a bit to fully connect with this one at first, but I really appreciated the haunting tone and immersive world Laure Camail created. The writing had a lyrical, almost eerie quality that fit the story perfectly, and there were moments that genuinely gave me chills (in the best way!). It’s a slower burn than I usually go for, but if you’re in the mood for something moody, introspective, and just a little bit sinister, this might be exactly your vibe. Definitely an author I’ll be watching!

Thankyou to netgalley for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I would first like to say thankyou for the opportunity to read this book however after 100 pages I realised this book just wasnt for me, the writing style wasn't for me and not being able to send it to my kindle meant that the formatting was off for me too unfortunately. Thankyou again for the opportunity to read this book.

In Death’s Hands has a compelling premise that blends fate, forbidden love, and ancient mythology. The idea of Death breaking the rules to save a life and the chaos that follows is an intriguing setup, especially for fans of romantasy with a cosmic twist.

Liv’s journey takes her from an ordinary life to a world of immortal beings, forgotten gods, and dangerous secrets. There’s a clear undercurrent of mystery and tension, and the story explores big questions about destiny, love, and the ripple effects of defying fate.

While this one didn’t fully click with me, I think readers who enjoy fast-paced stories with romance and mythology at the center may find something to love here. It’s an imaginative debut with a lot of heart.

Thank you for approving my ARC request!

I really wish NetGalley had half stars because I truly feel this was more of a 3.5/3.75. I read this book in perhaps a day and a half; it was definitely engaging even if it took me a while to get into it. I picked it up and put it down maybe three times, but it definitely picked up and hooked me around the halfway mark. This was, ultimately, a fun novel and a really unique concept. I really liked Liv and felt sorry for her and the absolute vendetta the "shadowy forces" have against her. Death is a character that you can't help but like, and the writing itself is engaging, suspenseful, and exciting.

I got to about 20% but realized this just isn’t the right fit for me. The tone and style didn’t quite click, and I’ve been finding that new adult isn’t really my genre. Grateful for the chance to preview it.

Death spares Liv's death when she was 4 yrs old. Fate tries to correct her fate but causing her death again.

Love the exciting plot. I like the characters a lot. Really enjoy the supsense and plot.

Thanks to the publisher for the arc.

It’s giving final destination! But make it fantasy!
It took me a while to get into! And I feel like I only started getting into it around 45% in.
However I had a lot of fun!

IG (the_reading_ghost) and Goodreads review:

Review (⬇️-➡️) [RELEASE DATE 08/08/25]

🖤🕯️

I asked for an ARC copy of this book because after that many months of teasing on IG I couldn't wait anymore and boy I wasn't deceived.

In Death’s Hands is where love meets the edge of the unknown. It’s haunting, intense, and beautifully written. From the very first page, I was drawn into this strange, tender world where Death isn’t just a concept, but a character you might fall in love with.

The story is poetic and gripping: a slow descent into darkness, lit only by the light of one woman’s presence. And somewhere along the way, a heartbeat is caught between two worlds hers and his.

The morally gray MMC is impossibly hot and unforgettable. The tension drove me mad . There’s also a surprising dose of humor that caught me off guard in the best way.

All this to say I'll wait patiently (or not) for the second book !
