Linsey McGoey provides an thought-provoking look at the intersection of late-modern capitalism and philanthropy (or philanthrocapitalism, as she calls it) through a study of the Gates Foundation.

Particularly of interest was the way the way the results-, competition- and profit-driven philosophy of big business such as Microsoft is transferred to philanthropic undertaking, so that funding is cut or re-purposed if results are not being seen within a short period of time.

Overall, No Such Thing as a Free Thing was engagingly written, and gave a good insight into the charity 'industry' and the way it is inherently structured as a capitalist project of the Global North. Will keep an eye out to see what McGoey publishes in future.
