Big thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC! This was my first book by D.K. Hood, and while the premise had me hooked, the execution didn’t fully land for me. The story starts off intriguing and I was curious to see how it would all unfold. I listened to this as an audiobook while at work and flew through it pretty quickly.
The plot does take some wild turns, especially with the manipulation and betrayal, which kept me going. But as someone who reads a lot of thrillers, this one missed the mark. There were moments where the pacing dragged- and I struggled to stay invested.
That said, newer thriller readers might find this one more gripping. It has all the right elements: deception, family, betrayal, and psychological unraveling. It just didn’t deliver the depth or tension I was hoping for.

The Liar I Married by D.K. Hood hooked me entirely from the first chapter. I listened to the audiobook and couldn’t stop. I devoured it in under 24 hours! The pacing is sharp, the twists come fast, and the tension builds with every chapter.
This is one of those psychological thrillers that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. When you think you have it figured out, another reveal knocks you sideways. The narration was also spot-on, making the characters feel vivid and real, with just the right amount of suspense woven in.
D.K. Hood delivers a perfectly crafted domestic thriller filled with secrets, betrayal, and a chilling sense of “What would you do?” I loved every minute of it.
I highly recommend it to fans of fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat thrillers. This one does not disappoint!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the audiobook ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is a fun mystery to listen to. I had such a good time! There is a decreased rich grandmother who left lots to be inherited. You know what that spells!
4 stars
Many thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture Audio for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was so impressed with this book! I intended to start it as it was later in the afternoon. Figured I’d get in a few chapters right? Wrong! Once I started it I couldn’t stop. Stayed up late just to finish it! It was full of twists and I loved it! Would recommend!!

⭐⭐⭐
Are enough for this book.
At first, it was intriguing bc I wanted to see where the story would go, but it didn’t excite me much after that, since I was able to predict the events past the halfway point. That’s something I don’t enjoy when reading thrillers—I prefer my guesses to be wrong so I can admire the author’s depth of thought.
----> I enjoyed listening to the book, especially since the narrator’s voice didn’t bother me—in fact, it made me want to keep going until the end.
Everything was good and enjoyable, and the twists in the plot were exciting. But as I mentioned earlier, the fact that my predictions turned out to be correct kept me from giving it a higher rating.
HOWEVER, this is just my opinion—maybe you’ll enjoy it more than I did.

*ARC review*
The Liar I Married by D.K. Hood is a fast-paced psychological thriller that kept me guessing until the end. The tension builds steadily, and the characters are well-developed, especially the protagonist's emotional journey. Some plot points felt slightly predictable, but the twists made up for it. A solid, suspenseful read for fans of domestic thrillers.

Something different from a trusted author DK Hood. I love her police procedural series with Kane and Alton so when I heard she was writing a psychological thriller I knew I needed to read it.
What a wild ride! So many dodgy characters who all had a reason to harm our main character Jessie. I really did not like most of them, especially her husband John. There was so much lying, so many mind games and the gaslighting was insane. I did like Jessie, although she did make some really bad decisions. I felt for her having no memory after the accident, it would be awful to not remember anything or anyone.
The audiobook was well done, I hadn’t heard this narrator before but she brought the story to life.
Thanks so much to Bookouture for my advanced copy of this book to read. Publishes on August 22nd

Ooooooo. I liked this one! I hadn’t read anything by this author before, but I’d heard good things and well, I wanted to be super fancy and add memes and stuff but I can’t get it to work…so we’ll just say they were not wrong!
I got hooked pretty quickly. The premise is that someone is suspicious of their husband and then they wake up from a coma and they don’t remember anything or know who to trust.
The story is told in dual timelines with flashbacks frequently to help you piece together what happened before the accident.
The plot twist was just twisty enough that even though I had it figured out I was second guessing myself until the very end. I was throwing out outlandish theories. It was HER!! IT WAS HIM!!! Why?!?!?! Idk. What motive did they have?! None that I could think of but I was sure I was missing something!
“Maybe I am a little crazy.”
All in all this was an enjoyable mystery that kept me listening until the very end. I would recommend this if you enjoy that type of thing.
P.S. the audio was great! Very enjoyable to listen to. Loved the narration and the pacing. 10/10!
Thank you D.K. Hood, Bookouture Audio, and Netgally for this free ARC. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a fun, quick audiobook! This was a twisty psychological thriller full of family drama and deceit. While the twists were slightly predictable, it was a fun easy listen. I’m excited to read more books by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for allowing me to listen to this arc!

I am not going to write an overview of the book because everyone does that and one more is redundant.
So, this book was a 2.5 ⭐star read for me. I bumped it up to 3 stars because I appreciated the effort the author tried to make with this novel, but it just wasn't for me.
Others have said this is predictable and I would agree with that as well, although there is a little bit of ambiguity thrown in there too. There was just a lack of depth missing for me in this novel which is what missed the four star mark for me.
What I did appreciate about this book is showing how jumping to conclusions can absolutely lead to wrong conclusions.

Not a bad book, just not a standout. It’s a quick read and might work better for those newer to psychological thrillers, but for me, it was just okay.

I have never heard or nor read a book by D.K. Hood before, but decided to take a chance on this one...I was not disappointed.
First and foremost, I am always skeptical with single narration, but the story allowed for a clear understanding of who was talking even though her voice doesn't change drastically for male narration.
The story was great and I found myself trying to figure out the twists the entire time. I am sure maybe some others could guess things, I am not always the greatest at it!
I will read more from this author in the future!

This was a fast paced thriller I couldn't stop listening to! I really enjoyed the narrator's voice. The story was easy to listen to and keep track of. I finished this in one afternoon!
The story itself was unique in that it was told from various timelines twist together well. At no point, you really get your feet on the ground and in the know. I enjoyed the twist at the end!
Thank you the Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the ALC!

Thanks to Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for this captivating eARC thriller.
🎧 The Liar I Married by D.K. Hood
Narrated by Kate Handford
D.K. Hood has once again delivered a 5 star psychological suspense
If you enjoy this this type of read (or listen, in audiobook format) and you haven't yet read this author, you are truly missing out on a talent at the top of her game! However, this riveting book is a great one to start with. I was immediately drawn into the mystery of this story, and I couldn't help but finish it in one sitting, it is an excellent example of a top quality, skilled mystery / psychological thriller writer.
🔍 D.K. Hood’s The Liar I Married is a taut, twist-laden thriller that plunges listeners into the undercurrents of a seemingly idyllic marriage. With her signature blend of psychological tension and procedural grit, Hood crafts a narrative that feels intimate yet expansive—balancing domestic unease with the pulse of possible deep betrayal.
Kate Handford’s narration is riveting. Her voice work adds a visceral layer to the story, capturing the protagonist’s escalating dread with subtle tonal shifts and emotional nuance.
Handford’s pacing is impeccable—never rushing the tension, yet never letting it stagnate. Her ability to differentiate characters without overacting makes the audiobook feel cinematic without losing its intimacy.
Handford especially shines in moments of psychological unraveling, where her delivery becomes a conduit for the protagonist’s paranoia and fear. It’s a performance that elevates the material, making the audiobook arguably the best way to experience this story.
Hood’s prose is lean and effective, with a structure that keeps listeners guessing. The use of unreliable narration and shifting perspectives adds complexity without confusion. While the plot leans into familiar domestic thriller tropes—secrets, gaslighting, buried pasts - and t does so with enough originality to feel fresh.
Themes of trust, identity, and the fragility of perception are explored with a psychological edge. Hood doesn’t just ask what happened—she asks why we believe what we believe, and then leads us to question our assumptions.
The Liar I Married is a gripping listen that will appeal to fans of Gone Girl and The Couple Next Door. It’s not just a whodunit—it’s a who-can-you-trust. With Kate Handford’s stellar narration amplifying every twist and tremor, this audiobook delivers a haunting experience that is a ton of fun to listen to and/or read.
5 stars for this book in audio format grab a copy as soon as it hits the shelves!

4.5 rounded up. Amnesia trope is hard to pull off, but *so* much fun when executed well. I ate this up and licked the plate!
Premise - Wealthy heiress-to-be Jessie had it all until, on the cusp of inheriting a massive fortune, she's involved in a horrific car accident. The brain injury she sustained in the accident puts her in a coma for several months and when she wakes up she learns her husband, John, has pretty much moved on entirely.
While she was unconscious, John stripped her of her wedding/engagement rings and other significant jewelry he gifted her during their relationship and given the latter to his erstwhile mistress, Rebecca. He won't let Jessie see their daughters or move back into the family home, keeping her isolated under the care of a palliative nurse, Dolly, who seems to be hiding things from her. All the while, he claims he still loves her and only has her best interests at heart.
Now John is pushing Jessie to give him power of attorney and, with it, control of her inheritance. Jessie has to piece together what really happened before John succeeds in compelling her to sign over all she has - or before he finds another way to get his hands on her riches.
This was addictive! I couldn't put it down - brilliantly paced, with characters so well developed There was a twist at just shy of 75% in that I can't write about (I don't want to spoil it) but I absolutely did not see it coming and it raised the stakes through the roof. I want more!
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Kate Handford. Handford did a great job with the read! Varied, engaging, and somehow cozy (without turning down any of the thriller intensity). This read was on the level of Tamsin Kennard, a real treat!
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio, for the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

While it’s far from a “mind blowing twist” as it was really predictable throughout, it was a fun read and I enjoyed it.
I had intended to start it for a short while and save most for before bed and when I wake up, my typical audiobook time, but next thing I knew I consumed the whole thing in one sitting as I got other things accomplished.
I’ve never read this author before which makes sense as police procedurals aren’t my thing and that’s their typical sub genre but I liked his simplistic writing style. I would classify this as a laid back popcorn type thriller. Low stakes and one that you don’t have to think too much about. I don’t mean that negatively at all, it’s just a comfort type read.
It was narrated by Kate Handford who did a decent job but I’ll admit I did have to speed it up significantly as she has that lilt to her speech patterns where she goes up at the end of every word. It’s just not substantial listen to 8 hours of that. For the most part she spoke at a decent pace but it was inconsistent as I was able to listen at 2.5x speed with easy clarity and that’s not typical for me at all. So while you lose the narrators spin on the nuance by speeding it up, on this case it helped and the listen was enjoyable.
As far as the plot. I enjoyed it even though I felt the “twists” were easily discovered well before they happened. The one suspenseful aspect was you questioned who you could trust at one time or another and that was fun.
It comes out August 22nd 2025 so get this on your TBR to get in a thriller mood. It makes for a great entry to the thriller genre as well.
I am thankful to have gotten a complimentary audio ALC from Bookouture Audio through NetGalley to read which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily leave a review.
