A must-have read for families navigating the complex world of neurodiversity, 'She's Just Spirited' provides a relatable, easy to read personal account by Nefertiti Austin as she shares the experiences her family faced with her daughter Cherish, from pre-diagnosis, the assessment phase and beyond.
Full of lots of personal anecdotes, hints, and strategies, the author strives to empower parents by breaking down psychological phrases and expert advice, offering much-needed, clear explanations about the diagnostic process, IEPs, educational meetings, different therapeutic options that could be available to support your child,, as well as how you can advocate on their behalf and much more.
The book is divided into 11 very self-explanatory chapters, each offering reflections and the author's 'two cents worth' with related hints, such as; taking your own minutes at meetings, ways in which to make better understanding of the pyscho-evaluation, following neurodivergent social media influencers and the importance of working together as a team throughout. She's Just Spirited' would be suitable to read the traditional way, from start to finish, or as a guide that you can read relevant chapters/ snippets of to support your area of interest/ specific need.
The author includes lots of recommended resources and reading to support both parents and children themselves as well as lots of relevant research and specialist advice throughout.
Although written from an American perspective, there's lots of very useful and relevant advice that can be applied across the world..
