Essential reading on China's agribusiness involvement in Africa. Brautigam goes beyond the sensationalist headlines, drawing on meticulous research to show that China's engagement with African agriculture is - contrary to popular belief - very limited. There are no 'land grabs', there is no massive export of African crops to "feed China"; there are a few joint ventures and showcase projects, all relatively small, with varying levels of success.

The book indicates that, rather than there being too much Chinese investment in African agriculture, there is probably too little. Many food-importing African countries stand to benefit a great deal from Chinese investment and agricultural expertise, if a workable model can be found. This will require further experimentation over the coming years.

Excellent investigative reporting. Dispels some of the longstanding myths about both China and Africa, educating the reader and helping them think more critically about both countries.
