Clara Davenport works for her family's company, which was just outed as the biggest villains in Fraser Falls’s history due to their stealing the idea of the small town's doll. She's determined to solve the PR nightmare and make things right with the town and the doll's creator, Jack Kelly, to finally earn her dad's approval and the promotion she rightly deserves. But Jack Kelly is convinced that anything to do with Davenports is evil and is determined to ignore any of Clara's attempts to make things right. If only he didn't find Clara perfect in every other way but her last name.
It's the literary equivalent of paint-by-numbers or the dozens of Hallmark Channel holiday movies that come out every year, but that's a big part of why I enjoyed it. The stakes feel high for the characters, but I, as the reader, find them basically non-existent becuase I know where everything is going and how everything is going to work out. All that's left after that is enjoying Grace's writing and how it brings the characters to life. Clara is the epitome of the overworked, big-city girl who comes to the small town with big plans that end up making her an integral part of the community that shows her what it means to really be there for each other. Jack is the small-town guy with a big chip on his shoulder about the big-city people who still manages to fall head over heels for the big-city girl with aheart of gold. It's a story told a thousand times before, but good writing and solid character decisions make it enjoyable despite the familiarity.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for the sweetly satisfying read!
