It's the story of an evergreen from seeds/pinecones to their uses as fully grown trees and with maps, trivia, jokes, and more!
The illustrations by Cédric Abt are detailed, imaginative, and FUN in bright colors.
Well suited for reading alone or WITH someone of any age, including ESL, and great for gifting to EVERYone, but especially to a school, waiting room, or your local public library!

These illustrations were some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It was watching my three year old son take what he learned from this book and apply it to our hike the next morning!

This is such a fabulous book! I'm a preschool teacher and I would totally love to read this to my preschool students. The rhyme is so poetic and lovely, while still teaching a lot of science! The pictures are absolutely beautiful. I love how you can see the family of people and deer growing and changing along with the tree. I also really like the infographics, jokes, and crafts at the end of the book! This would be a great addition to any school or home library. I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Enjoy this well-illustrated book. It's written in verse that is at times stilted, but the intent shines through in the story of a pine cone to a majestic tree. Forest animals of all kinds enjoy the bounty provided by the pines, and even people find the joys of an evergreen pine tree to brighten up their holidays. Families will enjoy the gentle illustrations of the pine tree as it grows, and nature lovers who want more information will find some detailed informational pages at the end.

What a perfect way to explain the life cycle of pine trees and cones and how they produce seeds. The story is told in loose verse, with lots of illustrations to accompany what the verse is saying. Even more than that, it is about families and how their lives might intersect with that of a pine tree. This would be a great early intro to science and botany. There are many descriptions of how the pine tree helps animals when the weather is rainy or cold and snowy. There is also a section of facts, trivia, jokes and the plans for a hands-on crafting project.

Oh my goodness, I adored this book! This is a year-round favorite for those kids (and adults!) who may be curious about pine cones. The writing is beautiful and whimsical, invoking feelings of nostalgia and reverence for pine cones and pine trees. I loved the informative section at the end of the book. Thank you, NetGalley!

I received an electronic ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids through NetGalley.
Barnaby takes readers on a journey from pine cone to full grown tree with pauses at each stage. The entire book is told as a connected poem. The artwork is realistic and shows readers how pine trees grow and fill needs in the life cycle for several species. I appreciate the pages of informative text included at the end. A perfect introductory book for younger readers.

Both informative and comforting, the book focuses on the pine cone, but it's secret is that it's not really about the pine cone its about what the pine cone becomes and it tells the story of the life cycle. To appreciate nature in all its glory this shows how one little pine cone becomes a mighty tree and how the trees are all across the world and are special in their own ways but share the common pine cone. It protects, it lives, it grows. Then the backmatter explains locations across the globe, the vocabulary of a pine tree, and even some tree jokes.

A special story.

A thoughtful, poetic nonfiction look at the lifecycle of a pinecone, this is a lovely book to read during the winter. At the end of the book, there are instructions for making a pinecone craft. My only critique is I wish the craft involved using a real pinecone so that readers can study the details.

The illustrations were lovely, and the facts were interesting and thoughtful. I highly recommend this book for schools and libraries.
