BOOK REVIEW: “Squirrel Lock Holmes: The Pet Rock Mystery” by Ashley Belote (A Graphic Novel!)

When Reggie the Rabbit can’t find his missing pet rock, Dwayne, Squirrel Lock Holmes and Watson are on the case! They help Rabbit retrace his steps, but will they be able to find him?

This book is seriously so cute! I find that it’s generally hard to find graphic novels at lower grade levels, but this one is perfect for first or second grade! I love that some of the words are repetitive, which makes it simpler for newer readers! The characters have personality and are well thought out. I think it’s a great choice for those newer readers who aren’t quite ready for chapter books yet!

The back of the book also features some fun activities such as:
🐿️How to draw Squirrel Lock Holmes
🐿️How to draw Watson
🐿️A Search and Find
🐿️Clues for the next adventure

This book is adorable and I rate it as 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I received this book for free in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.

This cartoony Sherlock Holmes-inspired mystery doesn't have a lot of red herrings but it was a silly story with all the elements of a good mystery. Readers who are ready to transition to short graphic novels may enjoy this, especially with many decodable words. Throughout the chapters, there are bigger vocabulary words highlighted with the definition so they are able to understand words that are higher than their reading level.

I recommend this book for schools and libraries.
