I have to be honest: the prolog almost made me bail on this book. I'm glad I didn't, though; the pseudo-memoir technique, clunky in the first pages, really helps the book take off. There are no new twists to this saga of a rust belt mobster, but it's packed well, written engagingly, and develops a winning protagonist -- as well as a surprisingly fun third-act sidekick. Whipped through this book in two sittings, and never got bored.
