I REALLY wanted to like this. Merfolk? I live and breath mermaids. Star-crossed lovers? Alaskan setting? Sounds like a recipe for moody magic and high-stakes conflict. Instead, I got stuck in a whirlpool of clunky dialogue, zero chemistry, and characters I wouldn’t even follow on Instagram, let alone a 300+ page journey.

The book majorly suffers from “tell me, don’t show me” syndrome. Emotions? Told. Worldbuilding? Told. Plot twists? Also told - without build-up or tension. At 60%, I officially DNF’d because I realised I cared more about my laundry than whether the fish came back :(

This had so much potential! But instead of diving into a richly imagined underwater world, I got a murky splash of vibes and an overfished plot. Thank you to the publisher for the ARC - but this one just wasn’t for me!

A classic is always a classic for a reason. The same can be said about the "our families/people hate each other" trope. What a delightful read. I loved how these two characters went from hatred/loathing to the point of having this Romeo and Juliet-like passion. It's not just romance, and the plot itself is well-structured and enjoyable to follow.
I hope to read more by this author, especially this series.
Thank you NetGalley and the author for the eARC.

Oceansong is described as an adult contemporary romantasy that is an Asian Romeo & Juliet meets The Little Mermaid, set in the grittiness of the real world. I'd say it does hit those points. We definitely get the forbidden love and war between families. I was really interested in the relationship between Kaden and Angie. Hello, merman. I did struggle with some of the pacing and tone shifts. Human men do not come off well in this story, and it seemed like Angie didn't try to help until well into the story. I needed her to stand up for herself sooner. There is one character death that is pretty satisfying, though. I am curious to see what other stories will be added to this series!

Thanks to Hey Hey Books and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
