Like other reviewers, I got an arc that is in a very large font pdf format that makes it very irritating to try to read. I did read the first few chapters despite this but I found the writing a little clunky and pedestrian. I applaud the use of a nonbinary/intersex main character but it was awkwardly written, like typing out “ the detective “ again and again instead of their name. The characters felt stereotypical and cliched, like the rookie cop who is presented like a starstruck little child and the protagonist who is the superstar. Still glad for the representation.

I was grateful to get this as a read now copy but unfortunately it was sent as a PDF file so it's difficult to read on Kindle App and not readable on a Kindle device at all. It sounds really interesting and was looking forward to this read, I'll have to obtain this at a later date.

This is a wonderful story! Admittedly as a very ignorant person, I found this book incredibly interesting and educating, on top of being absolutely unputdownable!
I had no idea this is the second book in a series. I read it as a standalone book and it was great!
The mystery was incredibly good and when I thought I'd had it all figured out, something came up that threw me off, WOW!
An absolutely fantastic binge read.

I'd never heard of this author before the book popped up on NetGalley, and you can be sure I'll be seeking out book one and eagerly awaiting book three! This is, I think, the first book I've read with <spoiler>an intersex protagonist</spoiler>, and to this ignorant cis person's eye, the issues were handled marvelously. I put that up front because Sam's gender is front and center in this story (being forced to dress/present as a woman as part of their investigation).
The mysteries were satisfyingly twisty-turny, though I did spot one of the culprits early on (unusual for me). I'll be interested to see how another thorny plot line plays out in future books. And the romance with Teddy is utterly swoonworthy. All in all, this gets four-plus stars from me.
My thanks to the publisher/NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book.

This appears to be the second book in a three book series which I was not aware of when I grabbed this as a read now copy.
It’s available on Kindle limited which is wonderful because unfortunately the format it’s uploaded in. I physically cannot read it. It’s a PDF but very zoomed out in a way that looks very odd and it will not send to my e-reader. I do not like a combination of lack of transparency about it being in a series and the fact that it’s not accessible.
I plan to simply read this on the Kindle unlimited instead
Thank you for this ARC! I appreciate the opportunity to leave honest feedback voluntarily.
