Where to start with this book. I have very mixed feelings about it. I enjoyed the plot and the message of the book, but the writing style wasn't great. I know it's aimed towards a YA audience, but it felt like we were being beaten over the head with the point. Every time there was an opportunity for a metaphor or a show-don't-tell moment, we were told exactly what the point was and how the characters felt instead. However, it did grow on me as it went and I did end up enjoying my time reading it. It has quite a bit of potential, I just think it could have used more finessing. It had great representation and talked about important political topics though!

I was invested in what was going on and enjoyed the overall feel of this, I thought it told a story that I was looking for in this culture. It was so well written and the characters were everything that I was looking for. I enjoyed getting to know Maya in this and thought it was a engaging story. Marcia Argueta Mickelson has a strong writing style and was glad I read this.
