I really enjoyed getting to read this book, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall feel of this. The overall concept was so well written and thought the characters were so well written and enjoyed seeing the growth of Geb and the rest of the characters. Andreja B. Gunjaric was able to create a unique storyline and glad I read this.

I picked up this book for a few reasons
1) to see if it would be something middle grade child would like to read
2) I liked the idea of a prehistoric adventure
3) I thought there might be a bit of time travel.
Middle grade - the language is young and easy to understand. However, there are themes that may not be right for different children - there are scenes of brutality, death, childbirth, illegitimacy, and some other violence imagery.
The story itself is almost a turducken, a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey. Ben is heading to university and tells his flight mate a story of him and his grandma telling him a story of Geb. Geb's storyline is the main quest plot of the book. The grandma + Ben sections are reminiscent of the Princess Bride where Grandpa tells the bedtime story, but here, it's used as an educational device to give lessons on climate change, animals and other topics. Then there's current Ben recounting the whole thing to Sofi.
I don't really see the need for any of the modern bits, especially the grown up Ben, although it does provide a bit of framework for the Geb tale. There is also references to Ben's grandpa who makes an appearance at the end, and that also feels extraneous and unnecessary.
The actual prehistoric adventure is a good tale, just be careful about younger readers.
