This is a compelling story based on a real person. Christopher’s numerous escapes are so unbelievable, I guess it’s true that truth is stranger than fiction! This is a middle-grade book for kids who are interested in history and can handle mentions of peril, injuries, illness, and death. Christopher is a great example of determination and patriotism, though at times he makes choices that might seem immoral. This book is not about morality or glory, but the harsh realities of war apart from the battlefield (e.g., capture, prison ships). At times, I felt the writing could have been stronger and more historically accurate (e.g., it’s incorrectly mentioned that Washington signed the Declaration of Independence). Overall though, the story is interesting and full of historical detail.
