I usually enjoy a mermaid book, but there was something about the mixture of the drab UK setting, the weirdly jarring poetic writing and the less than believable romance that made this more of a miss than a hit for me. Some people will definitely love it though!
This book was sweet. I really enjoyed the concept and the lore behind it, but I didn't like the writing. I found the teenage voices really unconvincing, which was a shame. I am tempted by the sequel though in hopes of finding out more about the background of the Mer.
LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED THIS. Such a magical read. Brilliantly written.
Unfortunately this one really didn't work for me - Dockrill's writing is poetic, but I found it hard to get to grips with the story while the narration of the sea, in particular, bored me. A miss.
I am not going to be reviewing this book, but thank you for the approval.
An inventive, if a little confusing, effort that could only have come from Laura Dockrill. It plays with prose, gender, expectations and storytelling in the style of Jenny Valentine or Hayley Long, but it was a little too surreal and became difficult to invest in. I wanted to like it but found it just didn't work for me.
