Sometimes I think about book trends, particularly how one kind of book gets popular, whether it be a dragon boarding school or a haunted/cursed film and suddenly everyone’s trying to write the same thing and garner the same success. If it’s done badly, it’s really annoying. If it’s done well, to be perfectly honest I’m like hell yeah give me 50, I’ll read them all.
I’m not sure who popularized the older main character who solves a mystery, though in my mind it’s Jesse Q. Sutanto with Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murders and all I can say in this case is thank you so much and hell yeah, gimme 50 of ‘em.
This book is like what if Sidney Prescott lived in a retirement home and someone was mowing down all the senior citizens. Scream: The Senior Care Home, if you will. Along those lines I wish I knew the why to everything that had gone on, but maybe that’s what makes it scary. The killer did it seemingly because they could, what’s scarier than that honestly?
I’m so glad I preordered this, it’s absolutely worth revisiting; the characters are all so lovely and charming. The section in the middle absolutely broke my heart and was such a thoughtful commentary on how we tend to treat the elderly, as a headache, an inconvenience, a burden. That part really got to me, same thing with Tatum. Devastating and beautiful at the same time. How dare you make me feel feelings during a senior slasher Philip, wtf dude? I can’t wait to check out more of this author’s work, I fear I’m now hooked.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
