Bee Wilson has a gift for turning the seemingly ordinary into the fascinating. As a non-cook who is relatively unsentimental about possessions, I would not necessarily have imagined that I could love reading about people’s treasured kitchen tools and other food-related items. ..but the fact that I knew it was Bee Wilson who was writing about this topic led me to give this book a shot, and I was not sorry. Prompted by her own unexpected and painful divorce and a pan with which she had once made a cake to celebrate her marriage, Wilson explores the treasured kitchen objects of people all over the world with whom she connects to discuss the topic. She weaves in history and culture to offer the reader a much wider view of the world through the lens of these often simple and sometimes quirky items. I have long believed that I would happily read anything Bee Wilson wrote and be better for the experience of having done so, and this newest book of hers only contributes further to my thinking this is true.
