Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

It's Groundhog Day, Dear Dragon by Margaret Hillert is a book in the Dear Dragon series for developing readers. According to the synopsis, the book is about when "a boy and his pet dragon go to see what will happen when the groundhog peeks out of his hole." The sentences themselves are simple and less natural-sounding, which makes sense, since this book is for a developing reader.

Overall, It's Groundhog Day, Dear Dragon is a children's picture book with plenty of teaching points. As a teacher, I liked that there is a section for phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary in the back of the book. Those are definitely useful activities that will help kids academically. I took off 2 stars, because I found the pictures somewhat lacking. Some children's books are read over and over, because children adore the illustrations. Unfortunately, you won't find that here. If you're looking for a book for a developing reader, I recommend that you check out this series, which is available now!

This is a simple early reading book for young readers. My kid really liked the dragon. Its the only memorable thing about the book. This is the kind of book you would want in a library or classroom for lots of kids to enjoy. It is helpful. The reading reinforcement notes at the end of the book are helpful.

This is a nice easy read for little ones that are just beginning. It is also a good book to use if an adult is reading to ask comprehension questions with. The colors are bright on each of the pages. There is even a guy going bald on one of the pictures---so realistic. I do not like how they say that it will get pretty if the ground hog does not see his shadow. I feel that winter is such a pretty season. Otherwise a great read.
