Nothing Tastes as Good is a sharp, compelling exploration of obsession, desire, and self-destruction. Luke Dumas writes with a directness and intensity that makes the story impossible to put down, drawing you into the protagonist’s chaotic world with both empathy and discomfort.
The narrative is gripping, and the emotional stakes feel raw and immediate. That said, some parts felt slightly repetitive, and at times the intensity bordered on overwhelming. Still, the writing is strong, the themes are thought-provoking, and the book leaves a lasting impression.
Overall, it’s a provocative and engaging read for anyone interested in dark, character-driven fiction.

Luke Dumas delivers another chilling descent into fear with Nothing Tastes as Good, an addictive thriller about the price of transformation.

Emmett Truesdale has tried every diet imaginable, but nothing can fix the pain of his body, his dead-end job, or his longing to belong. When he signs up for a clinical trial of a new drug called Obexity, the results are shocking. The weight melts away, his confidence soars, and suddenly the world seems to open its doors to him.

But Obexity has side effects. Lost hours. Uncontrollable cravings. People who humiliated Emmett start vanishing, and the police whisper about a cannibalistic killer. Emmett begins to fear that the miracle he begged for has turned him into something terrifying.

Dark, nerve-racking, and impossible to put down, this is a novel that asks what we would sacrifice to be seen, loved, and accepted,

Here we’re following a morbidly obese gay man who is taking an experimental drug for weight loss. I loved the names of the drug and the drug company itself which is called Monstera and drugs like an appetite suppressant called ConSumin and the drug he ends up with which was Emac-8.

I am conflicted about the first part of the book. I understand the need to fully describe the struggle of morbid obesity and our main characters struggle in particular. I just wish it didn't take up the whole first half of the book. The second half of the book took off like a rocket. I loved the investigative pieces interspersed throughout.

The writing flowed with the narrative ease that marked A History of Fear.

Overall I loved this and would recommend it to any fan of horror. It stands on its own as a unique work. It would be perfect for anyone who has struggled with their weight, General body issues, or just fitting in.

It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope there is more to come from this author! I am totally hooked! This was an outstanding novel from the cover to the last page!

This was definitely a unique book and I appreciated that. As someone who has tried all the diets and pills to lose weight, the synopsis to this book felt personal, now add horror to it and you’ve got yourself a pretty crazy and disturbing book and I say that in the best way!
