A good introductory volume on American history. Well structured, which means you can drop in and out, or pick and choose events, sections, etc., that might be of interest. It's a good length, too, which means it won't be intimidating for newer enthusiasts of American history. There are certainly things that could have been examined in more detail, but as an introduction this has a lot to recommend it - I imagine most people will finish this wanting to know more about certain aspects (analysis is thin, but that's to be expected given the scope of the book).
