I'm from a time when there were more deaf and blind people because of diseases we don't see much anymore, and I've never understood why we all don't learn sign language. It isn't just inclusive of people with hearing deficiencies, but it also is great for communicating with younger kids and when not wanting to disturb those around us.
This story is beautiful-- a deaf kid joins a class and his new friend sees that sometimes he looks lost and sad. He shares his wonderful drawings and learns sign language, so the two friends are sharing each other's ways of expressing themselves. It's really sweet.

This book brought tears to my eyes. I am the mother a Deaf four year old and there are very few books about the Deaf experience. Helping children understand that there is more than way to communicate, and the importance of acceptance, is VITAL if we want to live in a kind world. THe artwork was lovely and did a great job capturing the ASL signs as well as illustrating what was taking place with the children. The plot is very relevant and represents a minority experience that many struggle through daily. I will definitely be buying this to give to the school library and the parents of my son's friends. Thank you for writing this.
